I've noticed that at some time or another, most parrot owners begin to consider buying a second bird. Sometimes the reason is to provide company for the first bird. In other cases, it may be because the experience with the first bird is so wonderful that a second parrot seems a logical next step. Whatever the reason, a few things should be considered before adding a second bird into the mix.

The Pros

There are many good reasons for buying a second bird. Parrots are wonderful and amazing creatures. As an owner of seven parrots, I can tell you that each is unique in its personality and abilities. For me, seven parrots has been seven times the fun!

They also keep each other company when we're not around, and I consider that to be a big advantage. They seem to enjoy being in the same room together, and if I take one of them out of the bird room to spend some one-on-one time with me, after a short while the others will start to call out to their missing friend.

The Cons

Two parrots are twice the noise, twice the mess, twice the expense and twice the amount of work as one. If your first parrot tends to be noisy, the new bird will probably pick up similar vocalizations. If you live in an apartment or if someone in your household is particularly sensitive to noise, this can be a huge problem.

Another potential disadvantage is that the two parrots may become bonded to each other and become less interested in having a relationship with you. If you don't want this to happen, you can minimize this by housing the birds in separate cages and placing the cages on opposite sides of the room.

For me personally, the joys of having multiple birds far outweigh the disadvantages. But every person is different, and you should carefully consider whether you have the time and money to properly care for a second parrot before adding another to your home.
