Acme Juicer tips for great-tasting fresh juice

Have you ever considered juicing at home? If so, I highly recommend the Acme Juicer. While not inexpensive, it is one of the least expensive juicers on the market that still does a good job of juicing a large variety of fruits and veggies.

Parrots call baby chicks by name - Parrot News

I came across a fascinating article about a study which shows that parrots use a unique call for each of their chicks and also their mates. The study was conducted by animal behavioural scientists at the University of Hamburg.

The news article concludes that "Parrots are unique among avians. They are the primates of the avian world and are very highly developed creatures with complex social systems and prodigious cognitive skills."

It's nice to see a study that confirms what most parrot owners already know. If you'd like to read the full article, you can view it at DailyIndia.com. It doesn't look like it's been picked up by US news outlets yet.

How old is my Quaker Parrot?

I am sometimes asked if it's possible to determine the age of a Quaker Parrot. Unfortunately, this is very difficult to do unless the bird is very young or very old. Quaker Parrots are usually fully feathered around 6 weeks of age. At that time, they greatly resemble an adult bird. However, if the bird is younger than 9-12 months, it may still display some characteristics of a young bird. Here are a few things to look for.

Feather Forecast - It's Molting Season!

We are mid way through the month of August. The summer is nearly over, and school starts next week for the kids in our area. It also means that it is nearly time for our Quaker Parrots to begin their yearly molt.

Soon, over approximately a six week period, our parrots will slowly lose and replace the large majority of their feathers. While I've never actually seen an estimate of how many feathers a Quaker Parrot has, I can tell you that with seven birds this amounts to literally thousands of feathers that I will be cleaning up over this period of molting. (Oh boy, can't wait! LOL) I know other parrot owners will be dealing with the big molt soon as well, so I thought I'd share some tips on how to make this yearly event easier on both you and your birds. Read More…

Parrots and Emergency Preparedness

My husband and I have developed basic plans for handling some common emergencies in regards to our seven Quaker Parrots. Tonight we were able to experience a "test" of sorts when our electricity went out for over 2 hours.

Welcome!

Welcome to the new QuakerParrots.com Blog.

I'm really excited about adding this blog to the site. For some time I've wanted to have a place to post news about the Quaker Parrot site and forum. I'll also be writing some new articles about Quaker Parrots (and posting some old ones).

I do a lot of reading and research, so I will probably share about some of those subjects as well. I hope you enjoy this new addition to the Quaker Parrots site.
