hi there i just got me a 4 month old quaker and this is my first bird. I have always wanted a parrot and everyone told me that the quaker is a good beginner bird. he seems kinda shy and scared at times but he seems to be doing good. i also have 4 kids and 6 dogs. if anyone could give me some helpful tips i would greatly appriciate it.

Welcome to the forum! You have certainly come to the right place for information on quakers!

My advice would be take some time and read through the threads ... both current and archives. TONS of info there!

Hi & welcome!
My best suggestion is to get a copy of Mattie Sue Athan's book, Guide to the Quaker Parrot. It is an excellent resource for anyone who has or is interested in Quakers. It is usually available at local bookstores or through Amazon.com. Price is about $10! Worth every cent!

Hi groovenmom- welcome!
Have you named your baby yet? We want pictures!
I think Quakers are good first birds. It was my first, and now I am happily managed by two!

Congratulations on your new fid (feathered kid). You are now officially a Parront.

Patience, patience, patience. Don't be too anxious to drag the bird out of the cage. It is a whole new environment for him, and he needs some time to learn that he will be safe and happy here with you.

Spend time talking to him, using a calm, quiet voice, as much as you can. Tell him what a good bird, pretty bird, he is and how happy you are to have him in your home. Give him several days of just watching everyone and listening to what is going on around him and it will help him feel safe and sound.

Use caution around your other pets. I would encourage you to not even attempt to bring the bird out while they are in the same room. Make sure his wings are clipped so he cannot fly into other parts of the house where they might be.

Good luck and spend lots of time reading other posts. There is some great info here, and don't be afraid to ask lots of questions. We all love to give advice.
