Hubby did... SOMEthing... while he was cooking. I have no clue what, neither does he. Let's just say that the entire apartment filled with a thick smoke in a matter of seconds. We have some very black pork cutlets now. Heh. I looked in the bathroom and bedroom, the only rooms with doors, and they already had smoke in them.

This is where it comes in handy that I keep Andrew's travel cage within arm's reach with the door open and ready to go, all I have to do is throw him in, zip the back shut, and run. I did just that - grabbed him with a towel, got him in, and ran coughing. LOL. Everything's fine, minus the pork cutlets which are deader now than they were before. We sat outside for a while, until the mosquitoes came out, and the smokey smell is almost gone. We've got all the windows open, all the fans on, and the portable AC on high. I'm gonna go plug in any air filters that I can get my hands on. The carbon monoxide detector is working and never went off.

Andrew's not showing any signs of heavy breathing so I'm guessing he's okay. In fact, I just filled his dish to the top with nutriberries as a reward for behaving so well through the whole thing and he's eating like a pig. laugh.gif

He will probably be fine. If it was anything like teflon poisoning he would have started presenting with symptoms within and hour (likely within minutes) or so of exposure. Keep an eye out for any conjunctiva or respiratory irritation or infection...these little guys are tough wink.gif

Sorry about dinner, though! laugh.gif

It was cast iron, we don't own anything teflon. Well, my sister got us a non-stick baking pan so we save that for cold stuff like pudding and jello.

What's conjunctiva? blush.gif

As far as dinner, I have to say, I've never seen food that black before! laugh.gif

How can you do that much damage to a Pork Chop? Did hubby fall asleep or something. I always cook them on my stove top cast iron grill. Nothing....beats cast iron. It's heavy, and you have to season them a few times, but, they are great to cook pork chops, and they clean in seconds with a just cold water and a brush. (the wooden ones with the thick bristles that are used to clean woks in chinese joints)

Teflon ....? (what's that?) If not the cast Iron, I use decent grade stainless steel. Farberware classic is fine.

I still can't figure out how hubby burned the pork chops. Heck, I'm Jewish, we're not supposed to eat pork (always do though) and I still have never burned pork chops...... laugh.gif

No he didn't fall asleep. tongue.gif laugh.gif My mom said it was probably a combination of the heat being too high, the cast iron skillet not being properly seasoned, and the pork cutlets burning because the temperature was too high. Poor hubby's got oil burns all over his hands from the splattering. He hates the electric stove in this apartment and still isn't used to it, he keeps complaining that we should replace the landlord's stove with a gas one and take it with us when we move out. laugh.gif

OK.....I know this is a parrot forum but. The splattering most likely came from one thing.....and that is somehow he got water mixed in a hot grill with grease. The biggest mistake that people make is pouring water on hot skillets, pans or whatever, that already has hot oil in it. You know they say that oil and water don't mix. Well, that is even more true if you are putting even a little water in a hot greasy cooking utensil.

Now don't blame the electric stove. I have one, and I don't like them either but that is not why the pork chops burned, or why your hubby got splattered.

OK, if the cast iron is not seasoned properly......that only menas you are going to have a problem cleaning it, that really should not have anything to do with why the pork chops burned.

If it is not seasoned properly, than you will have to re-season it. That really is a job. If you want to know how to do it, PM me and I'll help ya. On the other hand, most cast iron is cheap (20-30 bucks a piece)So if you really messed up you pan/grill....toss it. It is the real expensive stuff like
Le Cruset (the best cast iron under the sun) that is worth saving. But for new cast iron....buy nothing but Lodge. They are the ONLY American made cast iron company. And it is preseasoned. And the prices are great. And I love them. And they are available everywhere. And....I just cannot find enough good things to say about them....so here they are:

http://www.lodgemfg.com/

And.....I still don't quite know how he burned the chops...

sounds like hubby just flat out wasn't paying attention to the chops....hard to burn them to that extent if you are standing over the stove! even on high heat!

glad everyone is ok, and good luck scrubbing out that cast iron skillet tongue.gif

mashed potatoes for supper is good biggrin.gif you could even share with Andrew!
