Doing some research and I've always loved the look of the Sun conures, but have heard they can be very loud and shrill. No I don't live in an apt but do have neighbors and also work from home so would be under the same roof with the bird (vs working 8 hrs someplace else and coming home to bird noises). Not to say the QP is a quiet bird but wanted to know from some Sun owners the pros/cons of owning one of these pretty lil guys.

Anyone?
Thanks

How much louder are sun conures than quakers? About 10 times louder!!

My conure, Lucy, is a hybrid, sun/dusky conure. Dusky conures are considered the 'quiet' conure. I have birdsat for Brenda's sun conure, and can honestly attest to 'ear piercing' levels of noise that I very rarely hear from my Lucy. Suns are on the upper level of loud.

Hi Paco'sMom
Lady who has the baby (which started the research) says she lives in an apt and no one has complained....perhaps its too young? LOL. She says she switches the toys weekly and has the bird out (not sure how long is out playing) and isn't bad. Of course that does not jive with everything else I've read, which prompted this post ....and hearing from others not looking to make a buck on selling their bird.
Figures such a pretty bird would be loud, lol. I need to find a Sun forum, lurk a bit to see about the complaints. My fear is getting another bird (any kind) and having it set the existing flock off.
Thanks for posting.....wonder how loud yours would have been if NOT a hybrid!!

The breeder I got Max from had Sun Conures and I agree with Gail, they are much, much louder. Perhaps not the quantity, but definitely in the quality of the squawk. Very shrill. Not a bird I would ever own.

I wanted a Linne...lady who I was going to get one from upped the price after we'd been discussing me getting a baby. Still want one but will have to find one from someone else. Heard they are the sweetest things with wings smile.gif
...and a lot quieter than both the QP and Suns.

Linnies are wonderful little birds!! Mine are super quiet, doing lots of giggling type noises. My male is quite the talker too smile.gif

I know of a lady in Michigan (she ships) who has linnie babies available right now. Her greens start at $200.00 (I believe).

Someone I know described the sun shriek as "loud enough to crack concrete" and would "have you wishing a fire siren would go off to drown it out"........

I live in the country, so no neighbor trouble, but I don't know if I could live with it.

Carrie Ann...
Breeder had told me $150 for green, then upped to $200...so $200 then add the $125 or so for shipping & crate ...can't do.
I'm patient...figure good things come to those that wait. lol

Tjbird...
Yes have heard similar, haven't actually heard a Sun up close and personal. I think I can deal with a call now and then but a constant screamie meemee I think would drive me nuts (let alone the neighbor, a mere 10 or so feet away).

I have both and my QP is just as loud as my SC. Mine doesn't yell a lot, jut a little in the morning when the sun gets bright and lat in the evening when the sun goes down. Now and then he screams for me if he want me to play, but most of the time he is quiet enough! smile.gif

That is better news...at least Bo isn't noisier than Kiwi...I know all birds are different and some are more spoiled than others, some can entertain themselves better....I just ordered 2 sesame street videos for my QP, better variety than whats on tv and I find it tends to muffle the sounds a bit better.
Hoping there are more QP and SC owners out there who'll share their experiences.

I agree with Weeza.

Raja does have a very shill scream, but he is not very vocal a little in the morning and when someone drives up. Other than that you would never know he is here. Oatmeal is Sooo much louder than raja the rest of the day.

I have never owned one and have never been around one to answer the noise question. They are quite beautiful though. I think some of it depends on your own noise level tolerance. I can handle far more than hubby. So if you are located somewhere that neighbors arent bothered then you might be able to stand it. If I lived alone I know I certainly would consider some of the louder species. Mine ,I think, are quite tolerable as birds go. Might even consider them quiet most the time. But when they do get started hubby gets a little annoyed. Course he isnt a bird person either.

I had one and she was soooo very loud when she wanted attention! Very shrill. We got her as a baby, just weaned and never had her around loud birds, she just had it in her! Thats why when I moved, I had to leave her with my ex. I loved her dearly, but couldn't take her with me to an apt. She was the greatest little lover and talked a bit too! Really smart and beautiful, but have no illusions about the noise. It can and most probably will happen.

Yes my Cherub whenever she wants attention she shrilly calls! And thats alot! Its not her fault its just the noise level her Creator gave her. We do get annoyed sometimes but well we just deal with it. When I got my Sun I knew they were loud but I didnt think she would hollar as much as she does. Each Sun is different Im sure in bits and bobs with the amt of calling!

Yep, but they are slightly larger then a P'let and slightly smaller then a Budgie. I have a link in my signature that takes you to pictures of my two. I have an Olive Green and a Cobalt Blue.

I take care of a sun and he's here almost everyday. He's not a constant squawker but when he does, you hear it! Very high pitched yet gravely call.

My neighbors who say they can't hear my birds normally unless our window's are open...Asked me if I got a new bird because they could hear one. LOL...So if they can hear a Sun through closed windows and they don't hear my Cockatoo's...what's that tell you?? Have to say though he's a beautiful bird...talks a little, but as beautiful as he is, I don't think I'd purposely purchase one myself.
