Are there any other reasons you would want a Quaker other then to talk and learn words...?

They are a serious commitment, not just a show piece.

Sorry if I read your post the wrong way, but if that's the only reason you could muster to buy it, I don't think you should...

I must agree with Natalie. There is much more to Quakers than their speaking ability. Quakers can live for more than 20 years, which means this one will be with you for 18 more, should you decide to buy it. I think you need some more information before making this deicision.

Also be careful what you wish for. I love birds to begin with. But have to say I did hope my grey would have a normal speaking ability. shes less then two, started mumbling from the breeders at 3 months. I have lost count of her vocabulary. She also will sometimes talk in front of strangers. Sometimes, it would be nice to have a quiet bird. if you are a bird person it won't matter if they talk or not. my qp says only a few word, less then my gcc. She has become my favorite pet, because she is just so darn cute.

I think you guys misunderstood...I want a Quaker. I been searching for one for a while now. I acaully want a younger one so I can trian it myself from a baby but I can't find one that young. So when my friend offer this one to me I just wanted to know if I can trian it to do new things, things I like. Just like a a new one with a little background.

OK, first, Welcome to the group.

All QPs don't talk, some talk a little, some talk a lot. I have one that talks but says maybe 15 things.

All are not going to be like the star of the forum Twizzy..seen here (hope the link works for ya!
Sounds like he is yelling at Darrell Strawberry, baseball player. He even makes a sound like the bat hitting the ball just after he says "ready?"

You will enjoy your bird, whether it talks a lot or a little. Maybe the owner didn't talk to the bird a lot.

There are a lot of people on the forum here that have been so wonderful to rescue many parrots of different ages and from what I have read over the years they have certainly learned new things from their new owner.

It really comes down to the love and care they receive.

Having a talking parrot is a blast, but honestly there are just so many other wonderful reasons to owning a parrot. Their affection, funny antics, squabbles and much more are just so rewarding.

Do you know why your friend is no longer able to keep the Quaker?

I'll answer your question... without judgment, or opinion on why the question was asked. sheesh!

They never stop learning. If the bird talks some... it is capable of learning more no matter what the age. It also depends on how much time you spend teaching it. If you spend little time talking to it... it's not going to talk much. If you spend alot of time talking to your bird... chances are it will pick up speech.

Also... they have little minds of their own. They talk when they want to... not when you want them to.
