My QP just pulled a feather from his tail area that had been hanging out in a funny way since he landed on the floor in a very ungraceful way. It isn't bleeding at the feather site, but there is tissue and blood half way up the feather sheath. Does anyone know if this can be used to sex the bird via a blood test? Any good lab references? I am dying to know whether he is a he or she. My vet said if he lays an egg, I'll know he's a she, and to wait until then. If this is a chance to find out sooner, great! Any info appreciated. THANKS!!

I'm pretty sure you can use blood feathers for DNA sexing, I think your vet could get in contact with the appropriate lab and organise it for you

I just did the same thing with Ellie...excuse me.. ELLIOT...lol. I was preening him and accidentally pulled out a feather that was just coming in and still had blood in it. I used this place and they were great. They emailed me the results in about a week and I even got a certificate in the mail smile.gif

all they had me do was print out the order form and send the feather with the form in the mail. They said to not wrap the feather in plastic but to just put it in the envelope.

Thank you! The web site gave me info and Juki's feather will be off via priority mail on Saturday. I don't know whether to hope for a girl or a boy!
