Sinclair, Andrew, and I are vacationing in my mom's "mansion" til Sunday. Oooooh it's so awesome here! My aunt has been really mean to us lately so this is a very welcome change in scenery. Plus there's a whole new market of jobs and apartment complexes up here that mom is going to take us around to look into... who knows, maybe we'll just get jobs and an apartment up here! Down by my aunt is obviously a black hole for jobs.

Anywho. Mom's lived here 2 months and it still smells. Paint, rug, I dunno, it just... smells like new house. But it's had 2 months to air out. Andrew (our quaker) is here with us til Sunday, I couldn't leave without him. smile.gif Is he safe here? We have the cieling fan on in the bedroom... the window doesn't open and it's been cold here lately anyway. (Well, Florida's version of cold... lol... which I guess I'm getting used to, I actually needed a jacket a few days ago!) I'm worried about this smell. unsure.gif But well, it's not like it's brand new... it IS 2 months old... I just worry too much.

I think you will be fine. We remodeled our whole house and moved back in of January 08 and we let it air out for like 2 months and it was fine and you can still smell the newness and our bird are fine.

I have known birds to get very ill and die from paint fumes but mostly from the adhesive used to put down tile or linoleum. Just be careful and keep air flowing. If you can still smell any fumes, they are not good for a bird. Best wishes

Thanks. smile.gif Well Andrew's doing pretty well. I figured out how to crack that window open, I just have to remember to close it and not re-open it at night when my mom's got the alarm system on or else the alarm'll go nuts and the cops will show up. laugh.gif It doesn't smell too badly in our bedroom anymore.

LOL well it's not technically a mansion, it just is to us. The living room, sitting room, dining area, kitchen, and breakfast nook are like the size that our New York house was... and it's less than half the house. laugh.gif It's awesome!

I thought it'd take more than 6 months for me to adjust to Florida temps but I guess not. I woke up and needed a robe and to put the heat on and everything. Ah well!

As long as you have good air exchange like with the window open, Andrew should be fine. If you notice him staying lower to the ground that's reason to worry. Gases (fumes) as you know are lighter and rise to the top so if he's attempting to hang out down a lot at the bottom of his cage I'd get him into some fresh air.

Sounds like you're adjusting quite well to Florida life...Good for you. Hopefully the job market will be such that you and Hubby can find decent jobs and get out on your own soon. Good Luck!

I got an easy solution to indoor fumes and maybe toxic chemicals that can came from many sources specially inside closed houses. I got this book about 8 years ago and is reaaaaally great. I used for some presentations and lectures at my university and many people got a copy. Since then I have many of the plants in that book inside my home. They are generally easy to get and not expensive. People with birds in closed environments will create a healthier air for them and their fellow feathered friends. You can get a cheap copy on eBay in stores.

Here is the link to Amazon Info and a few sample pages -->
How to Grow Fresh Air: 50 House Plants that Purify Your Home or Office

*If you cant get the book just ask and I will give you many recommendations about the plants in the book
