My dishwasher broke two weeks ago and I must be spoiled as washing dishes by hand is not an easy job when you have lots of company. We had 12 people staying here including us, plus each day we had my step daughter in law and her baby here visiting. Our home is only 1200 sq feet so when you add 3 big dogs and 16 birds, you really do have a house full.
Anyway first of all the picture here is Emma and Pierre's latest baby. When Carrie-Ann said Pierre nibbling at the baby's necks meant he wanted to get down to business with Emma, she was right. He was the only hatch and you can see his eyes are dark. He is now dark on top of his head and his wings are dark. He is exactly 18 days old.
This little guy is already in his new home though. A few nights ago I was checking on him and noticed his crop was awfully full. I had separated Emma and Pierre to get Emma away from the nest box and Pierre so I left Pierre in with the nest and the baby. I thought maybe Pierre was getting a little over zealous about feeding him. I had put that carefresh bedding in there to help keep him warmer since he was the only chick so I put some paper towel over that to see how his droppings looked. They looked normal that night, but when I checked him the next day there were a bunch of poop coated mini cotton balls all over the paper towel. he was passing the bedding. I called my trusted breeder and she said get him in his brooder that I had on hand and give him instant ounces and water every few hours to help him pass this and if his cropw wasn't empty by morning to get him to the vet. I was up most of the night weighing him, giving him the instant ounces and worrying. By morning although the crop had empty quite a bit, I called the vet and got him in by 9:40. Thankfully my favorite vet was in that loves Pierre and Emma. She used to breed tiels. TO make a long story short I was telling her I needed to find good himes for him and 2 other babies and she smiled ear to ear. The look on her face was like she hit the jackpot. The wheels were spinning and she said she'd take him right now and wave the crop cleaning fee and hospitalization fee. She wanted him for her mother. Of course I jumped at the chance since she first of all is an avian vet and secondly has hand fed babies many times. How could I and this baby go wrong. She said she might not be able to give him up after hand feeding so I told her no problem I have 2 babies at home for her mom to choose from. LOL
So he has doing well, his proceedure went well and he's doing fine. She will get a picture to me probably when he feathers out and I will post it here. She also will keep an eye and ear out for a great home for the remaining two babies that need a home. I have a home for one of them, possibly two.
Emma is in a cage by herself and laying again. My vet said to keep an eye on her. I have been shaking her eggs as fast as she's laying them. I left them on the bottom of the cage and just today she started laying on them. egg number three today. I have added calciboost to her water on top of the manu mineral block and cuttle bone. Emma and Pierre have both been depressed since I separated them and when I took the nest box and baby away from Pierre he got up on the highest perch in his cage and sat there like a stone and wouldn't even look at me. That only lasted 24 hours though and he's doing better today. I have decided to move Emma into the other bird room away from Pierre as soon as she's finished laying this clutch of eggs. I don't want to add stress to her during the laying process as I heard that's risky. She's going to lay them regardless so I want her to be as comfortable as possible. The vet and I talked about the possibility that she may need the shot, but it is risky so we don't want to do that. I have reduced Emmas light to only 10 hours a day and I will reduce it to 8 after I move her. I wanted to do it somewhat gradually.
As for the other three babies, they are doing so well. Starburst is completely weaned but the older two still beg once in a while and Pierre is feeding them. I think Pierre loves feeding his babies. The babies are now taking real baths and spreading their wings and tucking thier heads under and chirping for more. They are very lovely little birds and will step up and are pretty darn hand tamed too. They are learning when the food comes in in the evening to rush to the cage. At first I had to chase them down to get them in, but now they are getting more mature I guess and know that tomorrow is another day to be out of the cage. LOL
Anyway I will do better at updating now that things are calming down around here.
