Hi there! I'm a bird (actually, all animals) lover, engineer, and landlord in Hamilton, Ontario. I don't currently have a quaker but my husband and I are hoping to add one to our family in the next few weeks. We do, however, share the house with Sprite (a very bolshy green Pacific Parrotlet), 5 rotten cats, one guinea pig, and 4 chinchillas. Haha - quite the household!

Sprite came to us rather suddenly just before Christmas - a friend of a friend was getting rid of him and we took him in. I had cockatiels when I was a kid and I've always loved birds, but my husband was skeptical. Well! Not any more! He has been totally won over by the litte green guy. Since then we have been researching birds to add a second feathered friend to the house - both to keep Sprite vocal company during the day while we're at work, and because Rob would really love to have a "talking" parrot friend. Sprite knows a bunch of sounds but isn't really a talker. He copies every species of bird in the neighborhood, though. He arrived at a quaker parakeet as a good playful bird who can also learn to talk, so here I am to do my research! Of course, Rob will love the bird, but it will be me who is primary caregiver/bird friend - Rob's a bit leery still of flying things with big beaks!

So - hopefully you can help us through our "new bird parents" phase and beyond!

Welcome to the Forum! Good for you for doing research. This forum has lots of info. I would buy the book by Mattie Sue Athan, The Guide to the Quaker Parrot.
http://www.amazon.co...n/dp/0764101765
Someone said she had a newer book but can't seem to find it. Others will be a long to help.
I am owned by Kiwi. When I got my Quaker, I did NO research, but I have had Mr. Kiwi for over 8 yrs. I love him to death!

Welcome to the forum! smile.gif Yay! Another member from Southern Ontario!

It's great that you're doing your research on Quakers before making the big decision! Feel free to ask any questions you want, with everyone's combine knowledge and experience someone is sure to know the answer! smile.gif Going through the archives is another great way to learn things as well.

It sounds like you've already found your new Quaker but if you are looking for a breeder, just let me know! wink.gif

We'd love to see some pictures of your fids too! Welcome! smile.gif

Welcome Civchic cool.gif . You are in the right place for all things quaker and a few more besides. Best of luck with your research. Once you get a bird, life changes forever!

If you are looking for a baby get one that is fully weaned from a loving breeder who spends time handling and talking to their babies.

No, not at all actually - we have only "decided" to get a bird in the next few weeks! Do you breed, Casey's Mom? If so, do you or will you have any green babies soon? Or do you have a good recommendation?

Thanks for the friendly welcome, everyone, and Joseph, I definitely will get a fully weaned and socialized baby. I raised chinchilla kits from a Mom who didn't take to them, and I don't want to go through that again if I don't have to! Thanks for the advice!

Here's my Sprite boy:
