Hello all you troubleshooters,
It's been a while since I've been on, so first off, hi everyone!

Secondly, Elwood has started to barber the feathers on his upper right chest area. I have a vet appt. set up for tomorrow, and I really hope it's a simple medical reason.

He still eats his roudybush like normal, and I can't think of anything that has changed except the weather. Also, it seems that he only does it when I'm gone. It also seems that he doesn't play as much - less wear and tear on his toys (which I make sure to change) and his poo seems to stay concentrated in one area of his cage. Also, I can see little bits of feathers in that same spot, but have never actually seen him in the act.

Any questions or thoughts?

I hope he comes from the vet with everything ok. Please keep us posted. Sorry I have no experience with plucking.

The concentration of his poops in one place Could mean that he is just sitting in one place all day or it could mean that the place is his potty perch. I have some that have poop no place else but in one area. So unless you know that this is diff for him then I wouldnt put too much store in that symptom.

I hope you get good news from the vet about Elwood.

I wouldn't worry about the poop in one area either. Yogi and Rayray both seem to have a designated area in their cages for toileting laugh.gif

I actually like it too, because daily cage cleaning is a breeze when you're not having to bring out the pressure washer hehehhe.

Elwood might just be a bit of a perch potato when you aren't home, prefering to sit and lounge in the bathroom as it were. Kind of like the bird equivalent to taking a magazine into the washroom to read laugh.gif

Will say a prayer for you and Elwood that everything is all right though.

Poor Elwood, hopefully he's okay! If it's just in the crop area it could be a yeast infection in his crop... let us know what the vet says.

Hugs and Good luck!

Jo: Thanks for the Timber update! I was just wondering how he was doing. Glad to hear he's doing well.

Just got back from the vet. He gave Elwood a clean bill of health. Mostly, he said that he wasn't too concerned about the barbering at this point, but if it continues or worsens, then we need to look into more diagnostic stuff. Overall, he didn't see anything alarming (no mites, no redness/indications of disease, good throat exam) and just said to vary his environment more. Well, I'm glad that he's healthy. I'll just have to work on giving him more variety in life!

Side note: he said for a wing clip to next time do a variation of the vanity cut (leave the first 2-3 flights) because the primaries help with knowing physical distance while flying. That is, the primaries are the first thing to brush up against a wall/glass or something. Also, he said that the primaries don't provide lift, but are used more for steering. Anyone got any input?
