I Think He Was Mad At Me... Owww

So I got home from a week long vacation today, extremely excited to get to see Phoenix again. Finally get to the house he is staying at, go inside, and he hops up on my hand very fast and I give him a couple of kisses. Suddenly bam, he chomps down real hard on my right pointer finger. Thinking it was an odd fluke since he NEVER bites me hard, I go to give him a kiss and BAM chomps down on my lip! Before I can get him back to his cage I get bit two more times on the left hand, and I have a bloody lip and bloody left pointer finger...
A couple lunges later, he is back to his cuddly old self and giving kisses. What the heck? Was that my punishment for leaving him for a week? What did I do to deserve that? What a booger...

I had the same issue when I went away for a week in January. I came home expecting my birds to be real excited to see me, but instead I got chomped by both of them. Within 24 hours they were back to normal and happy to be around me.
I think you're right, it's punishment. "How dare you go away and leave me like that! Don't ever do it again".

Oh, yeah, that was punishment.
I work a lot of weird hours and some days I don't have much time for my babies at all, and I always have to pay for it. Most of the time, Clyde will just ignore me and hang out with Daddy, but first he has to give me a good chomp or two to let me know I've been a bad mommy, being gone too much.

Hehe yeah I figured as much Tricky little chickens. I'm relieved I'm not the only one to experience it, but definitely not glad
. After I got home last night we had a nice hour long cuddle session where he just sat on my chest in bed saying "can I pet you?" and then I would scratch his head and pet his back and belly and he would say "ohhh yeah" and "Feel good".
So yeah, I think things are back to normal. I just wish he didn't feel the need to punish me before hand.

Who knows? Jake's never bitten me hard enough to draw blood, we got her while she was still being handfed. She's about 3.5 yrs now. We got Kiko when she was about a year. Kiko has been known to bite periodically and for no reason, and hard. Sometimes she'll be sitting on my arm chewing her beak, which I've always taken as a sign of contentment, then without warning she'll reach down and grab a hunk of flesh. She hangs on too, even when I'm trying to pull her off. There was a time about 6 mos. ago when Kiko would not allow herself to be handled, which we couldn't figure out. When she did let me pick her up she wouldn't allow it for long before she bit. I wound up bloodied on both sides of my chin and above my eyebrow. A couple of days later she laid an egg- that explained it. We then separated the birds which we had been housing together, and started spending individiual time with each one every day. No more eggs and Kiko is back to her (mostly) loving self save for the occasional inexplicable bite. I suppose that's just how it is and always will be.

Tater was the same way when I had to leave for Ohio on an emergency. He did not bite, but I got the cold shoulder routine for about a day and then he was back to his lovey dovey self to me. Those little green chickens have the cornest attitudes. But, I love him anyway!!

SMOOCHES lives with "mommy". Her mother is 85, and not doing so well.
She works all day, and spends evenings with her mother. We get together, about, every other weekend.
I've noticed, each time I go over, SMOOCHES is a little more aggressive toward me than last time.
Now, after reading all of your posts. I realize, it's not what I am doing wrong. It's what I'm not doing right.
I'll be going over there a lot more often, for more SMOOCHES, and daddy time.
Hopefully, some of my missing parts will start growing back!!!!!!!!
I know this is slightly off topic, but you all lit a light bulb over my head. THANKS!!!!!!!!

Yeah, Scooby is the same way. She will do step up when you get home from being away for any length of time and eventually do a bite to tell you that you shouldn't have been gone. Then she is sweet as pie. She is asserting her flock privilege. She always gets one bite. Then she is back to fluff and skritches. Hard to fault a bird who considers flock family.
