Hi,

So bhurji keeps opening his up again and again like he is yawning but he does it several times in a row... Is this normal?? Is he struggling to breath or something??!

It is quite normal for quakers to do this. I am not sure what it is but everyone that I have do this. Don't worry he is fine.

Joey does this for about 5 minutes after he eats anything. It doesn't matter whether it is soft food or hard. It looks like he is choking, but he's not. (He has choked and stopped breathing on a bit of bread before. Luckily I thought fast and was able to help him move it down into his crop. Then he took a chunk out of my hand-I have never been so happy to be bitten. biggrin.gif ) It is almost like he gets the food stuck in the back of his throat. unsure.gif I'm going to ask the vet when he calls me back next week. Does bhurji do it after he eats, or is it just random?

I have been told this is like a regurgitation thing that means they really love you wub.gif

They are trying to give you some of their food as a sign of affection like they would their young.

Cracker does this all the time, so that's my story and I'm sticking to it...he loves us, he really, really loves us tongue.gif

I may be totally wrong about this but hope not.

Good luck with your little featherbutt and hang in there, we're all in this together!

Monkey does this all the time too...they do this after preening if they get a feather stuck in their throat or after eating to move the food in their crop around for digestion.

I don't think it's a regurgitation thing as our cockatiels who aren't greatly attached to us might to it after preening our eating and I believe as Monkey's mom put it to move stuff around in their crop or they have an itchy throat. You may see them scratch their heads afterwards.

The regurgitation motion looks quite different and is more of a rapid head bopping.

I think it's a sign of a happy and contented bird, so long as there appears to be no distress associated with it.
