Hello! My name is Niki.

I have been a QP owner for about 2 months now. His name is Petey and he brightens my every day. wub.gif

I did not purchase him at the store, or through a breeder. Petey came to me through my mother, whom works at a vet. Apparently a lady brought him into the vet, she said that she found him outside. I really have no idea where he came from or what happened to him previously, but his is mine now. biggrin.gif

I was skeptical at first, only because i have never had such a high maintnace bird before. I have had parakeets in the past, but QPs are NOTHING like parakeets i have learned. They have much more personallity... and demand. Lol. When i first saw Petey he was at my mothers house in an old parakeet cage that she kept. I had no idea what to expect, but i have always loved birds.

I walked into the room and he was on top of the little cage. He climbed right onto my finger. At that moment i had to have him. laugh.gif I told my boyfriend that i was bringing a birdy home and he was thrilled.

Once we got him home to our apartment the first thing i wanted to do was get him a bigger and better home! We took him to the vet to make sure he is as healthy as possible. (There was actually another QP at the vet office, as a pet of theirs. His name was Greenbean, i thought that was just the cutest name ever. They enjoyed having a squaking contest.) I got a book on quaker parrots and tried to learn as much as possible. I found this forum and i have been reading a lot of the topics trying to see how other quakers act and how do deal with the biting and screaming. This forum has actually saved me on a lot of things.

For the first month he really didnt seem like he wanted to be around us at all. Always biting and screaming, but he did seem to enjoy our company never the less. Day by day he is warming up to us both. I'm still having trouble getting him off his cage, and i hope i can get some advice on that later.

Okay, i'll sum this up now. I'm Niki, once again... and I am very welcomed to be apart of such a unique community.

Thanks!

Niki & King Pete wink.gif

Hi, Niki & King Pete!
So glad that King Pete was able to be rescued from the great outdoors and found a wonderful home with you! You are both fortunate to have each other! Just wanted to take a minute to welcome you both and introduce myself. I'm Jess, short for Jessica. My hubby and I have 5 flying feathered babies! lol We have 2 macaws, 2 cockatoos and last but definietly not least our Quaker! We are fortunate that we have hopefully bird-proofed our house so that our birds can fly indoors safely with supervision. I do not advocate people allow their birds to fly or leave their wings unclipped as most people's lives and lifestyles are not suited for a flighted bird. Sorry but I felt I needed to stress this. Glad to have you & King Pete! Look forward to reading more posts from the two of you!

Jess

Warmest welcomes and hellos...so glad you and the King are here (you can call any Quaker your highness...most demand it) tongue.gif

We too have had our Quaker only a couple months and have learned so much here...you are very smart for doing your homework...it will only make your relationship that much better.

Just work with him a little every day...baby steps...these guys are very smart and they learn very quickly too...sounds like you are doing fine so far. He'll let you know too what he likes and doesn't as you have no doubt found already.

My wife blames Cracker for our other two fids coming home...she's probably right...I love the babies wub.gif

Enjoy the forum...it's easy to get hooked...looking forward to hearing more about King Pete and seeing some pix.

Hi and welcome to the forum! I see you are in Dallas too! What part? We live over by White Rock Lake, where there is a huge colony of quakers. Can't wait to see pics of "his Highness"!
