What Do You Think The Catch Is? This seems too good to be true!

So as I was perusing through classifieds, I found the following ad............

QUOTE
My blue buddy Rocky is in need of a situation where he can fly free in an aviary with other parrot buddies. I am currently getting a lot of noise complaints from my neighbors. Like other Quakers, Rocky is loud and vivacious. However he is very sociable and friendly, and loves the company of other birds and people. He also loves getting outside and getting fresh air. He is used to being out of his cage all day most days, as I work from home.

I love Rocky and have no sense of urgency about finding the perfect home for him. Rocky needs someone familiar with the high demands of being owned by a Quaker (noise, time spent preparing fresh food, cage aggression, foraging and enrichment opportunities, etc). Any money would go directly towards his annual vet exam. This would be approx $250, depending on the vet.

I'm open to any questions you may have. Rocky and I would love to visit and see if this could be a good situation for him.

Here were the two pics attached:

Number of downloads: 25Attached File  3k83ma3l1ZZZZZZZZZ95o8d518aac919e1de8.jpg (4.69K)
Number of downloads: 20

So after talking to her, she SEEMS very sweet and normal and well spoken (not the usual lack of english or grammar you find with scams...) everything seems GREAT and she has told me I wouldn't have to pay anything since my sister could take care of his exam for her. And she'd like to visit on Wed. to make sure everything is perfect.

Now I have to say that nothing serious has been said to send up red flags and by the way she talks and everything, I would make the horrible assumption that she isn't the type to be "needing the money' so her giving away a blue maybe WOULDN'T be a big thing for her so much as finding the perfect home...............

So what could the catch be or do you guys think this could just be my wonderful birdie-finding luck again?

Just be careful of letting a stranger step inside your home. A "HE" might show up instead of a "SHE", or maybe 2 or three people. Have others there with you when they come or plan to meet on a McDonald's parking lot and park right in front of the windows where people can see you if you need help. Maybe I am too suspicious, but just be extra careful. Have someone with you that is far enough away to get out and get help or call for help if needed.
I must be paranoid, but I have heard of a few cases that went bad.
Yes, you could get that lucky. Some people just can't take the noise.

I don't know WHY this crossed my mind as well but it did! She would have her boyfriend bring her up but she seems REALLY nice...and she seems like well...one of us! She called her Quaker a chiken LOL (I know that sounds so lame but to me, it's a sign that this is someone who has SOME amount of endearment to a Quaker) I don't know...maybe I am just being skeptical too because I seem to keep coming across these great deals on even GREATER QPs....(look at Mo!!!)
As far as they know, my husband is going to be here....although he wouldn't actually be able to be but you know what... I think I am going to have someone over or at least be on the phone when they get here and say that like its my mom and she's coming over for a visit or something..... that would deter any funny business and also not freak them out or offend them if this whole thing is perfectly OK......I don't want them to think I'm crazy and paranoid!!
I feel crazy for thinking something is wrong! I mean I HAVE gotten free or next to free birds before with no fears what-so-ever.........

OK so...game plan....A.) keep you guys informed...if anything, if I don't post right after they leave, you KNOW somethings up and jujusaffiesmom knows where I am!!! She can call my police department and they know me by name! (small town)

B.) be on phone when they arrive (whether theres someone on the other end or not LMAO)
State that it was my mom and she is on her way for an unannounced visit.

C.) I think maybe I'll put in a maintenance call for my Washer...the handle has been broken for over 6 months now but maybe this would be the PERFECT opportunity to have someone here that would be perfectly innocent but yet a GREAT protection since there'd be two of em and they have to check in!!

She hasn't done ANYTHING weird so I dont know why I'm worried but I really need to be careful because there has to be SOME reason that the Mommy Instincts are going off!

Of course be careful but I don't see ANYTHING that would raise a red flag in the ad.

People who are not bird people are easy to spot. I'd bet my old black hat that this lady is a bird person who just wants to find a good home for her little blue buddy.

Not every one expects to receive a quick buck when rehoming their birds. Most people just want to make sure the bird goes to a great home and money is the last thing on their minds. Hopefully it works out for you.

It sounds like she just wants whats best for her "chicken" but as everyone said, be careful. There's a lot of strange folks out there.

You know, you have other options...though it might raise a red flag to her...but if she truly is a bird person, she should understand.

You just tell her that you have a "Closed" aviary, meaning that you don't allow visitors in to see your birds because you don't want something being brought into your birds...I know many many MANY breeders that have that policy.

Tell her that you have very strict quarantine practices etc.

Then suggest that she meet you at your sister's clinic...

If she insists on coming to your home, go a little overboard with the disinfecting etc in that you have a bucket of bleach water or something of the sort and have them scrub their shoes before even coming on the porch etc. Then have them take their shoes off entirely...when they enter the house. Only let them to the door of where you keep your birds etc.

He is so adorable!

I agree that you should have someone there with you but she sounds legitimate. I can tell you that if I was going to rehome Quincy I would darn sure be demanding a home inspection so I understand where she's coming from. Maybe you could first meet her on neutral turf somewhere without the bird and if that goes well then have her drop by for a visit.

I agree, it sounds just fine and not all people are after a price for a bird. Most REAL bird people just want a great home for them. She could have been reading a forum where QPs are called chickens, but most likely is a bird lover. It's still better to be safe than sorry.

All on Craigslist, I sold 4 horses on to a woman in Texas, one to a man 300 miles away, one more to a lady clear across the state and a horse trailer to another lady who just happened to live half a mile down the road. They were all just precious horse lovers (two became customers of my artwork) and we have developed delightfull friendships, so I know that most are OK. It's those few who have done terrible acts of violence that cause us to be so cautious.

Just be careful. We'll say a prayer for your protection and hope you never need it. wub.gif
