I feel so aweful I just want to die. Yoshi flew onto the floor after getting a fright and I accidently stood on his lovely tail sad.gif

I just cant stop crying!

All of his tail feathers came out and I am SOOOOO worried about my boy. Is he going to be ok? Has this happened to anyone before? Will they grow back and if not, will be still be able to live normally? Obviously first stop is his doctor...

I am the worst mum in the world. I just feel so miserable at myself for doing this to him.

Don't beat yourself up!! Accidents happen.

They can "release" those tail feathers when they feel trapped. They'll grow back in less time than you expect.

I'm being brief here so you won't worry so much.

sad.gif Thank you. You made me feel so much better. He just looks so much like a chicken and not like his dorky green self and it breaks my heart. As long as he wont go into shock or something I geuess it will be alright.

Thanks again.

The taillessness will bother you more than it does him. He won't even seem to notice. smile.gif

As I mentioned, you'll be surprised at how fast they grow back.

They have a natural function that lets the tail feathers go easily so predators will spend time messing with tail feathers while the bird flies away.

That very same thing happened to someone else on the forum in the last few months. I can't remember who it was and it sort of seems like it was their child who stepped on the bird's tail ... anyway, they grew back in no time if memory serves and the birdy didn't seem to mind at all.

I know for a while Clyde was breaking his tail feathers off and they grew back quickly. He stopped doing that, but he broke off several in the first few months he lived with us (probably my fault for not knowing how big a cage to give him; he's got a nice one now) and they're all back and the missing ones didn't bother him.

As QPdad said, birds have a natural defense that allows them to release the tail feathers so it allows them more chance of escape.

I'll bet you'll find that in a month to 6 weeks he'll have a beautiful new set of tail feathers coming in.
I myself have had several birds have tail feathers come out under similar circumstances and they now have beautiful tails once again.

Thank you so much guys.

I think your right, I was definately more traumatised than Yosh- and the poor puppy was beside herself when Mummy started sobbing and acting neurotic. It was the most horrific thing I think I have ever actually witnessed. My heart broke and I thoought I had done something irreversable.

I am so relieved that they will grow back soon. He is such a little darling and gives so much love, and to have done that to him was a nasty feeling. Your right about him not noticing the difference though as well. I honestly think he has no clue??? He is exactly the same as he was- minus the tail.

What a morning........

** Update- I spoke to Yoshi's vet and she said that unless he is bleeding (in which case they would put him on anti-Inflammatories), he would be fine. She told me that Yoshi should not be allowed to fly until the regrow or he will drop like a stone. Lucky thing we cut his wings for the move hey!!

Poor little Green-bird... I luffs him so much.
