Pair admit Temuka bird massacre
15/09/2009 14:00:01

Two men have pleaded guilty to killing more than 30 birds at a South Canterbury aviary.

Jonathan Fleming and Simiona John admitted they ripped the heads off parrots, galahs and other exotic birds at the Temuka Bird Zoo last month.

A third accused, Michael Kircaldie, has not yet entered a plea.

Timaru Bird Club secretary Lynette Carson was part of a group of bird lovers who gathered outside the Timaru District Court for the trio's appearance.

"We stood outside and let them know that they were scumbags and mongrels. And they took it better than their families took it, their families were a little bit irate this morning and asked us not to call them names. We were confrontational - but nothing happened."

Ms Carson says the bird club is asking for at least a three year sentence.

The two men will appear for sentencing in October

People who are capable of that kind of cruelty to an animal are often practicing for doing it to humans next. Every serial killer I've heard of was an animal abuser first. If the sentences for animal cruelty were stiffer and suited the crime -- in this case, I would vote for ripping THEIR heads off, for example -- then the scum wouldn't have the opportunity to escalate. At the very least, someone who could do a thing like this, and people like Michael Vick, and another case of nightmarish cruelty to pit bulls in Missouri that I read about yesterday, should be severely punished with long prison sentences because they're dangerous and conscience-less and don't deserve to be running around loose with the real people.

Wish I could get my hands on them. Would give them the trashing of their life. Then let the law handle it.

I really wish I hadn't seen this post. I thought something had happened to a member's bird.

This is horrifying. It makes me so upset and then mad that I could easily rip those evil people's heads off and enjoy it.

I say give them the DEATH PENALTY. PAINFULLY SLOWLY. Better yet- Let me do it!

What would make someone plan and carry out something so evil?!??

That is horrible - at least they were caught. Sadly, the laws are such that the punishment will not nearly be enough and those who do things like this tend to esculate into attrocious acts against people.
