We brought petrie home 4 days ago and things have been going great. She's 4 years old, and very healthy. We've been going slow with her but also establishing the rules and a new schedule. She has bit me a few times and I earthquaked her, so she no longer tests me. HOWEVER, yesterday and today she has begun biting, nipping, pulling pieces of hair, and nipping ears with my two kids (10 & 7). My daughter spends a lot of time with petrie, and they seem to get along great, but she bit her, and my daughter reacted loudly and incorrectly (ouch, NO, ect), so now every time she goes to have her step up she immediately starts trying to bite her fingers and then laughing. I showed my daughter what to do, and told her not to cry out, say ouch, or ow, ect. The thing is though Petrie isn't responding to it.

With my son it's the worst, he's the 7 yr old. She automatically crawls to his shoulder and begins to bite his ears hard or pull out bits of his hair, and today she nipped his very close to his eye. He of course reacts by crying and then she laughs.

She does not do these things with my husband and I. I earthquak her when I catch her biting hands, ect but i'm not sure what to do about the other things. Obviously keeping her off the shoulders is appropriate, hoever she just runs up there so fast that at times I dont catch her.

Suggestions gladly excepted. We're only on day 4, so I'd like to correct this behavior before it becomes permenent.

With kids I think it's tougher because it's harder for them to remember the rules (no reaction and to push into it) I would maybe not let them pick her up for awhile but have them interact with her just by talking or offering treats. I know that's tough but if she learns she can get a reaction, it's not going to change. All birds can be a little nippy too but kids will be more sensitive to it (kids and my husband laugh.gif )

Also if she does bite you or hubby, just say "no bite" and put her on her cage for a time out.

I have no experience here either ..But maybe best to let the kids just talk and offer treats till your little guy has settled in as you said its only day four ..I can`t help but smile here (sorry) just thinking of Buddy (my boy) and his evil laugh where do they learn that I wonder I am sure they know exactly what they are doing..
Its a bit quite around here being the weekend you may get more help after the weekend...
Good Luck have you posted any piccys yet ..??

You are only on day 4. Birdie doesn't know the rules, and kids are tough to teach the rules ... kids move quick, talk loud and fast, and react SOOOOOOOOOOO much more than adults! biggrin.gif Birds LOVE the reactions they get from kids. Drama queens they are!

I would have the kids handle the bird ONLY WITH ADULT SUPERVISION for now. That way YOU can run interference when the bird tries to bite. Bird doesnt know the rules yet, either. It is all new to him.

Now she's done a complete 180 lol. She's hating me and loving the kids and my husband. I go near her cage and she starts hissing, and trying to bite. She literally turns into a little monster. If the kids or hubby leaves the room everything is usually fine, but if they are in the room while i'm trying to hold her or do whatever with her she decides she hates my guts. I havent done anything to her at all to warrant her behavior towards me. I leave her out of her cage when were home, but if we need to leave I can't get her into the cage without her taking a chunk of skin with her:(

What gives...

Come to think of it, she might be punishing me for taking a bead away yesterday lol. She got a hold of a necklace with glassbeads and broke it apart, taking one into her mouth. I had to bribe her with a black sunflower seed to get it but she was NOT happy she lost it. She was quite mad actually.

She's a tempermental little thing.

Any bird that bites has no business being on anyone's shoulder. It is a privilidge not a right. He has to earn it by behaving.
