Petries has been getting really friskie lately with everyone, but most particularly with my 10 yr old daughter. Which forced me to explain why she was doing it, and now my daughters really grossed out, and refuses to hold her when she thinks petrie looks to "puffy", which is when she starts to try and masturbate on you. Which is also quite frequintly.

Is there anything I can do to stop this behavior, or at least reduce is when she's being held? I realize this is a trait of quakers, and it's perfectly normal, however she is doing this on us instead of things in her cage. With that said,

Here are some things i've tried, and failed at. Was hoping these things would spark her interest, and she'd pick one to use lol.

I'm rotating the toys weekly
Giving her plenty of things to tear up such as paper, ribbon, balloon ribbon, toilet paper, ect
She has the bird shredder toy but she wont use it unless I rip paper from it and hand it to her
I bought her a snugly which she absolutly does not like or want in her cage. I've left it in there hoping it will grow on her. The color is green, do you think maybe this is why she doesn't like it? She's never sued one, her previous owner never gave her one ever
we purchased a much bigger cage

When she starts masturbating on us we simply set her back down, but it hasnt made any difference, she still does it as much if not more than before. How much longer do we have until she stops doing this? It's a seasonal thing right?

Well ... yes and no. That is, when they're frisky, they do it a lot more and want to do it a lot more, but there's no stopping completely even out of "season."

Jade is a lot less inclined to masturbate than Clyde is, and when she does do it, she has a toy that takes the punishment. tongue.gif Clyde has a favorite perch when he's in his cage, and tries to use my hand when he's out of his cage and in the mood.

Don't pet the wings or under the wings -- that usually makes Clyde feel romantic. I can kiss his wings, but if I stroke them, off he goes. However, if I pet his back with a flat hand (as opposed to cupping it so I'm stroking back AND wings), it doesn't set him off. You have to figure out what sets your bird off and avoid doing it. I imagine it's different for different birds.

If your bird starts doing the Parrot Pole Dance (just what it sounds like!) and opens her beak and starts saying "ch-ch-ch" then distract her. Does she have a favorite song or phrase? Whistle or say the phrase. Get a treat. Set her on her cage for a minute. I can almost always get Clyde to pull out of it and respond if I do one of those things.

This WILL decrease in frequency as the seasons finish changing.

Find a toy she likes and put it close to its favorite perch.

You can also put a name to it...Iknow I know....disgusting, but use a name that will only have a meaning for you and your family members. When ever the bird gets amourus just tell the bird "No +#+@+# and put him/her back in her cage. Be consistant.

I too would avoid petting her/him under the wings or on its back from about mid back to the tail. Concentrate giving scritches on the head and neck.

I have one hen that has a plastic cat toy that's a wiffle ball that's hooked to a bouncy string that she pulls down and uses...And boy does she make the bell ring wink.gif
Its a natural behavior and some birds are worse about it than others.

My daughter had a male that used his swing perch and he actually wore a dished are in it he did it so often.

Try keeping his daylight hours to more than 10 or 12 and see if that doesn't help some. But normally once they reach sexual maturity...they're going to do it you just have to continue to discourage them from helping themselves to you.

laugh.gif I tell Clyde it's icky to wanna get romantic with Mama. I just say to him "Ewww, I'm your MOMMY, that's creepy!" or something like that, and if he doesn't stop and give me that Clyde look (e.g., "Have you forgotten who's in charge here????" It's HIM) then I try one of the other things.

What exactly is "the parrot pole dance"? I've had Remmi for about 3 months and I don't think he has tried anything funny. He does seem to bite his corner snuggie rather hard and yells at it on occasion.

The parrot pole dance I saw today. She was in her cage and made a new best friend, her wood perch. The kids and I were watching a movie, and we look over and she was ahummmm "humping" the perch quite literally, and making this weird moaning sound with her mouth open.

I'm sure you can imagine that the kids were rolling over in laughter.

Little Max has a small plush covered cell phone rattle which hangs against his top tree branch perch that he likes to "ride" when the urge strikes him. I just give him his privacy and let Nature take its course. I tried to get him to stop the "Quaker Parrot Rodeo" one time and he fell to the bottom of his cage. I was lucky he didn't hurt himself. wacko.gif

Kellyann---Harley opens his wings, hunches down in the back end and starts twisting it; and also with his mouth open making a sound...you'll know it when you see/hear it....Have you not seen something like this in your birdie yet?.... huh.gif
