Harley had his vet visit today for an additional beak trim....he was a very good boy.....the only thing we had to wait one hour before Dr. Brown could get to us....(emergencies) ....and we were dark getting home....

His little carrying cage is kinda small and his long tail is always sticking up in the air....looking uncomfortable to me....sooo, being a loving and caring mom I took him out of the cage and let him ride on my shoulder coming home....Well all was well, now mind you it is dark....I get out of the truck with Harley on my shoulder yet, thinking since it is dark he will stay....WRONG----I had been letting his wings grow out because he has never been able to fly since I've had him for 6 years...he was just beginning to fly some in the house....

Lo and Behold, fumbling for my house key I felt Harley leave my shoulder and up in this large tall cedar tree right by the house he went...you can imagine the weakness in my knees that I felt....I couldn't believe what I just witnessed...my baby flew away....

I ran got the neigbor and he brings his extension ladder and up on the house top he went and looked and looked, but couldn't see him...He had a flashlight...In the meantime Steve had gone to get us supper..I phoned him and told him to come home and what had happened....Well he did the same, up the ladder he went when he got here.
and nothing....so then Steve takes the flashlight and goes up under this tree and shines it up through the branches and he thought he spotted him but wasn't for sure...well this searching went on for about 45 minutes.
I had called one sister and she in turn called the other sister and the other sister, Bernie came right out..She is the one that taught him the whistling of "Amazing Grace"....well she started around that tree because we felt he was there, whistling that song, and sure enough he started chirping....she has a flashlight also....in a little bit she spotted him, oh man how pretty that looked...sitting up there on a limb right next to the trunk....

Okay, by this time Steve had come back out and he saw him also, Steve is trying to get in among all the lower scratchy limbs to work his way up to where Harley is...I told Steve if he couldn't make it, I would....so Steve got to him, tucked him in his shirt and down they came....Poor Steve got bummed up pretty good, but he said he would mend....all we were caring about was our baby and he was sitting up there in an unfamilar place and it was cold and I know he was hungry....so I offered Harley something to eat and he eat good after mama finished kissing him all over.....and then he anxiously got into his bed in his room...I checked on him awhile ago and he is sleeping good....

SO NEVER UNDER ESTIMATE THESE LITTLE CHICKENS---------I thank the Lord he was returned to us in the same night.........and I sure as heck never thought this would happen to me........ huh.gif

Oh Julie, I cannot even imagine what was going thru your head during that time. I would of certainly been in a sheer mode of hyper panic! I am so glad Mr. Harley was kind enough to stay in that same tree. Thank goodness everything turned out OK!

Oh my, Oh my...My heart was in my throat reading the first few lines...then it dropped to the floor...Oh Gosh...I can just imagine what you were going through and doing...I'm so glad your family is so close that they didn't hesitate to reach out and lend a helping hand.

I'm so glad Steve was able to get to him and bring him down, safe and sound to Momma. And thank goodness Bernie had thought to whistle her tune. I'd give Bernie a great big hug for that one!

Oh gosh, my heart is still pounding.

I think you might want to have those wings clipped again, huh?? wink.gif

Sending you BIG HUGS Gator

Thanks everyone for all of your comforting words....I think I am in shock...just woke up from a nightmare and came to the computer....I also want to add how stupid and thoughtless I was to think that since it was getting pretty dark, that Harley would hunker down on my shoulder from the truck until we could get into the house...
Oh geesh, I shudder now to think of what happened....

I guess the little man's freedom flight is over.....

Below is a picture I happen to have of the big cedar (really it is a deodora) tree in my picture file...you can see it in the back ground...well Harley was almost to the top....

Harley...you little scamp! Getting some flight time in, scaring Mommy! You are acting like Marley when she went into a tree.
Julie: I am sooooooglad that Harley went to you guys after singing her fav song. You are the dearest sweetest Mom out there and I know that along with the rest of us, we feel any discomfort for our animals. I understand completely because I did the very same thing years back when I first got Marley. Thank God and all the saints he is home and safe. That was was so scary....hugs to you and again give Harley a big kiss from his aunt Joni...as my birds would say "Bad, Bad, Bad..no, no no!" dry.gif

Thanks for posting this, Julie. It's an excellent reminder never to underestimate these birds. Even with clipped wings, they can take flight.

Glad Harley is home safe and sound. Hugs to you, lady!
