I was checking out things for Tweety at Foster & Smith and they NEVER say if the product is the right size for a Quaker. They say "Parrot" but I think that refers to the big ones. I'm not sure if they're similar to Conures or Cockatiels or what so I'd appreciate if someone could tell me. smile.gif

Well Joey is 112 grams. So if you can imagine that size. LOL He can hit on my baby fingers and no weight drop there.

I think food and toys suitable for conures or cockatiels would be fine for quakers, too. JMO smile.gif

I would lean towards cockatiel sizes. They are about the same in body size, quakers just tend to be heavier and stronger. But my tiel and qp get the same things, and they are both fine with all of their toys and foods.

Thanks! That makes it a lot easier. biggrin.gif
What size pellets are good? Cause I bought medium (pet store owner recommended it) but I saw someone on here said small. He's not taking to the medium pellets but I'm not sure if it's because he's used to seeds or if they're too big.
My Ellie
Most pellets list some species of birds on them to give you the general idea of what kind of bird may eat that sized pellet. Good qp pellet sizes will generally say cockatiel, but may also list quaker, lovebirds, conures, and that sized birds. Also, some birds may like big pellets that they can hold with their feet while they munch on them, and some like smaller ones that they can just bite into. The particular brands I use are Lafeber's, which says cockatiel on it, and Zupreem Avian Entrees, which says small bird on it, but has a photo of a cockatiel on the bag. Also, if he is not taking to the pellets, are you switching directly from seeds to pellets? If he has never had pellets before, it's a process. Birds won't initially recognize pellets as food, and need to be converted slowly to a pellet diet to avoid starvation.

Any toy that is recommended for tiels or Conures is fine for Quakers. Some places list 'medium'size toys for Quakers and this is fine too. Quakers can be pretty rough on their toys.

As for the food...I use Cockatiel size pellets for all my birds. I find it is less messy that way.

I would say the small, tiny, or crumbles from harrisons. DON'T GET ZUPREEM pellets. At least not if your brds eat like mine. They pick up a pellet and then sort of break it, then eat it. Trouble is that the piece they break off goes sailing away.

The tiels live at the end of my bed (queen size) and I find bits of pellets up by my pillow every night and my floor is a mess usually. The harrisons pellets so far havn't given me that problem.
My Ellie
My birds love the Zupreem pellets. And they come in all kinds of fun flavors. True, they are kind of messy, but so is any bird food. It's not too bad though, just every now and then a piece goes flying. I think it depends on how they bite into it.

Actually, I'm in the process of switching him from seeds to pellets. All last week he only got his seeds for 15 mins. twice a day, but it doesn't look like he touched his pellets at all! So I thought maybe it was that the pellets were too big for him. Maybe I'll get small pellets too so he can choose himself.

If you have a coffee grinder you can grind the larger pellets up. Or use a hammer with the pellets in a plastic bag. smile.gif

I have four quakers...two eat zupreem natural in the conure size - they hold it in their feet to eat, and 2 are eating tiel sized...I find the tiel sized makes a bigger mess outside the cage.
Size really depends on the bird, in my opinion. My Captain would pitch a hissy fit if I gave her tiel sized pellets. Likewise, Zippy or Cutty II would refuse to eat the conure size.

I think I'm going to try to get samples and see what he likes. I remember seeing a list on here...now if I can just find it again! tongue.gif

My Boys like the Roudybush crumbles ..If your fid is use to seeds I think Crumbles would be the way to go ...next up is Mini...

Or a rolling pin and some pent-up frustration at the hubby! laugh.gif

Seriously, I used my mortar and pestle for breaking up the larger sized. Pooder loved them in the larger size...the tiels wouldn't touch them unless I crunched them. I bought the tiel size last time and Pooder will eat them, but doesn't seem to go in with as much gusto while the tiels seem to love to toss them. Seems I can't win for losing some days! tongue.gif
