Hi, I am new to the board and to quakers, I have several other birds but the quaker pair I recently adopted is my first bonded pair and my first quaker experience smile.gif (previous posts in intro and question on nesting behaviors, etc) I am planning to put this pair wub.gif in to a larger cage that sits on a covered porch while they get a much needed break from egg production. The porch is not enclosed, just roofed. Being In north central Florida, temperatures are pretty moderate but it can get quite cold (30's)relatively speaking of course!)for short periods of time ( a few days). At what temperature would the birds need to be brought inside? I know that Quakers are reported to be more tolerant of cooler weather than many species but how cold is cold? Any one have info to share?

Thanks!

If they are outside while it cools (for the seasons) they will acclimate, I live in NW washington and we have cockatoos, amazons, conures, quakers, cockatiels and lovebirds outside all winter, gets chilly sometimes, but we do put up a few heatlamps for the really cold nights. ANd being in FL you should be fine, no matter what! just amke sure there is some wind protection maybe.

If they are aclimated to the conditions...you won't have to bring them in. They survive the winters in Hyde Park (Chicago). They live feral in FL...so You should't have to move them in. Just make sure they have a spot they can get out of the wind.

Thank you! This is great news!

Welcome to the Forum. Here is a thread on this forum where temperatures were discussed a little.

I would be worried about bugs and insects and such myself and also cats and dogs and any other animal..........JUST MY OPINION

I have the baby from Kimtoo's birds. smile.gif

And she is the BEST!

I have indoor and outdoor sit ups going on but my birds are outside from dark til dusk and they are fine. Im in Tampa. Gainseville should be about the same.

They sleep inside only if Im going to be late getting home.

Worry more about finding snakes in their cage, I have found 2. huh.gif

Think the pool may draw them from the river.

We converted our screen porch to a three season room this year. It's not insulated yet, and has no heater. But I'm excited to think the cage could be out there in the summer. Just one more reason for ME to hang out there! (I often sit on the porch to thaw out. Hubby likes the AC at 71 in the house, too cold for me.)
