Every night i put manhattan to sleep at about 10:30 or 11 (he's n the living room) and i spend the rest of my night studying or reading in my bedroom. He is usually in his cage for 10 to 11 hours (recomended sleeping time, right?) undisturbed. But i've noticed that every morning for the past few weeks i've been waking up to the sound of a bell, a birdy bell. Manhattan is waking up every morning at about 7 or 7:30. He also takes a nap, well as far as i know i offer nap time for about 2 hours each day, hopefully he really is naping. His cage is next to a window but i put a dark somewhat heavy blanket on top of it to block out light that could be coming through the window and also drafts that could come from the cieling fan. I also run a box fan in the kitchen to help drown out any outside noises (from other apartments, even though no one is up at 7, and also cars and busses outside.) does he not need as much sleep as i am offering? i'm worried that he's not getting enough sleep at night. is there anything that i could do to help?

i don't have an extra room for a sleeping cage. i could turn his cage so that its not getting as much sunlight but still getting some.

Well, I'd start covering his cage at least by 9:00 pm rather than 10 0r 11 pm because if he's not totally covered as soon as the sun comes up and it starts to get light inside your apartment, its wake up time for the bird...So...I think it would be better for his internal clock to do it that way rather than offering him darkness in the middle of the day...since that's not natural in the real world. See if that makes a difference in a couple of weeks.

I too would put him to bed earlier. My birds can tell time (I swear!) and even when the light is on inside, they know how dark and late it is outside, and want to sleep!

I am amazed every day by Juno's regularity - he is in his cage, settling from 7:30pm every night, and in his happy hut for the night by 8pm. He makes an excellent alarm clock 12 hours later! Every single day - right on the button laugh.gif So, I have to agree - try putting him in to bed a bit earlier - he can still play for a bit and then go to sleep smile.gif
