Here's my alternative to sleepy huts..
Click to view attachmentI use a small dowel perch to drape a hand towel over. I then insert a longer dowel perch inside in case he wanted to enter from the top. There is catus wood which goes all the way up into it which is where he perches while sleeping. He seems to like it and I like cheap!
Easy to clean too as his poop falls to the bottom of the cage which I also line with newspaper daily.
Cheap and easy! Can't beat that.

Great idea. No sewing, and, no poo in the bed. Most of mine stick their little tails out to poop. But, not Paco... gross!

yep great idea!, My Kiwi, well he is neat with his poop...LOL, but he does it in the hut. Gidget on the other hand, she holds it all night and has a BIG one in the morning.

We did something similar when we first brought Nico home to live with us. The only drawback I see is that they still have to perch, and can't rest their little toes they way they can in a sleepy hut.

I agree with Michelle on that...But that is a nice little sleepy perch...Harley likes to feel something to touch when he goes to bed....But what works for one may not work for another.....

True that. I just came up with this idea about a week ago. I have no doubt I'll be changing perches (dowels/natural branches/ bricks LOL)
As a matter of fact I should start a new thread questioning the sanity of my obsession with changing setups with cages as well as play gyms/areas.
I've been wondering if Skeeter will want to "build" since his paront is constantly changing anything that's not welded down.

Martha Stewart moment: I went for conversion of an old hot mitt when Maxxx was younger. He occasionally sleeps inside now, but does like to nestle down on the top since it seems more like a hammock. I used non-coated, premium coat hanger wire to build the internal frame and wire ties to secure the frame to the mitt.
If any of you experienced birders have your “spidey senses” fire up over these materials or the use of machine wire (mesh) for cages, let me know.
Fair winds…

I might use that because Fred doesn't like those Happy Huts...

I think this is a neat idea! Thanks for sharing it...I hadn't thought of it. I am constantly changing my cage arrangement too. Partly because I think they need the change and partly because I am obsessed with it for some reason. I am going to give it a try. My parrots really like their sleepy huts but they do get them NASTY! I may alterate them or put up the towel when I am at least washing the hut! Sometimes takes a bit for my things to get through the laundry!

you know, You could take 3 sheets of plastic and superglue or hotglue them into a triangle tube so it could be washed in the dish washer. or if you want a back on it take some thin roofing plastic and glue it to the back, and for straps use those plastic bracelet strings and braid the together and add glue to the ends to glue them on.
