We turn the heat off at night at my house, and since I live outside Chicago, it's gets pretty cold at night around here (around 68 degrees or so in the house). I cover my birds at night, but in the morning it seems like they're a little chilly (slight shivering and such). Do you all think this is too cold or should I heat them up somehow? I hate to leave the heat on at my house all night because of the cost.

I usually put a blanket over manhattans cage. i like to think that it helps hold in heat because i also turn my heat off at night. i'm pretty sure they can withstand lower temps, as long as theyre not too low (like low 50s or 40s). To save money i keep my heat set so that it will kick on if it gets to be about 64 or 65 degrees inside. But i think for right now if its only getting to be about 68 inside then your fids are okay.
I'm sure others will come along and give their advice also!

I use a heating pad on top of Quincy's cage, I put a towel first, then heating pad, then cover him. I set it to the medium setting and I think it helps keep him cozy

Im always worried about an electric pad around animals, especally ones that like to chew. I bought a snuggle safe pad. You put it in the microwave and it stays at a comfortable temp. for hours. Its also good to use when you have a sick animal and the area needs to stay warm.
Some people also like heated perches, but I dont trust those either.

I read somewhere that the best is a constant between 70 and 85 ... but think 68 degrees farenheit is just fine as long as there are no drafts.
I'm sure our house is around 68 - 70 degrees at night through the winter ... the birds cages are covered so they may be a little warmer ..

Thanks for the answers! I figured they were tough enough, seemings as how they're loose in like Chicago and New York, and I know it gets pretty cold at night outside! That snuggle safe pad sounds cool. Where did you get it and was it expensive?

Brrrrrrr....I don't know how you guys cut off the heat at night when it's the most cold. I live in the Metro area of Detroit. That's the time when I want the heat on and tend to turn it down during the day when I'm running around cleaning or what not. Esp when I cook cause I have a gas oven and it heats the whole apt. Also have you tried putting plastic on your windows. It helps alot. My windows here arent so great. Esp the main bedroom. I don't put plastic on the main living room window though incase it does get too warm in here or I need just alittle fresh air. It does help the bedroom a lot. Also the door socks(not sure what they're called) that go infront of your doors at the bottom to keep out drafts.
