"G-G" came with one...I'm a little nervous about it because it hurts to touch - it is SO rough! Donna - G-G's former mom - told me it is mineral and she can chew it. I haven't seen her touch or stand on it.
What do you all think?

As long as you have lots of other choices, you could probably leave it in. I have the cement perch, but I rotate it throughout the cages, no one has it for more then a week so their little feet don't get hurt.

Remember these types of perches aren't made for the bird to stand on only to step onto and off of getting from bottom perch to perch above. This is how they work to keep the nails filed a bit. When they step on and off, the nails come into contact with the surface, filing a little bit. The more they step on and off the better.
Standing or perching on these are not good. They can cause burns on the bottoms of the feet if they use these as perches. They are only meant to be a step between two wooden perches one lower then the rough perch and one higher.
If you have a bird who perches on the sandy perches please check their feet often for sores and or infection.

I have them in most of my birds' cages. Of course, they have lots of other perches to choose from as well. The cockatiels are the only ones that I have ever seen actually chew on them, though.

Take caution with these products. A woman off of another board almost lost her Cockatiel to one of those. The bird had chewed on the lava rock and the rock didn't digest in her stomach. She ended up having some very serious medical issues.

Ah, I have one in each cage and they use it. I just have it as a stepping stone to go in and out of their huts.
I like em and have no problem with em...easy to clean too.
They do not chew em, but if they were to start, I of course would take them out.

I would definately discard the lava rock perch! My Penny, 14 year old cockatiel at the time, ingested lava rock off a hanging toy that he loved, I was totally unaware he was doing so. I found him almost 1 year ago last week in fact, he seemed to have had a stroke, was very weak, fell when he tried to fly. The vet discovered the crop impaction, which they cleared using a peanut butter and something else slurry forced down him several times a day-poor baby. But to their and my dismay, the lava rock also contains IRON!! and he was iron overloaded so he had to have chelation therapy. After all his therapies concluded he had lost from 110 grams to 54 grams, I almost lost him!! He has liver damage but inspite of it all is doing well. He has gained to just about 100 grams now, he still is a picky eater and I keep him warm with Avi-temp panels. I shudder when I see lava rock anything in stores for sale. In my opinion they are very dangerous.
I am a fairly new poster here with QP Paulie with QMS. Bren
