Ok, after posting an introduction it seems we inadvertantly picked up a potentially disasterous cage for our new addition.

Im looking high and low for cages (and hoping I can return this one and use the $80 towards the new one) but I would like to get some help from this experienced crowd.

We're looking for something that will allow good space, easy cleaning and doesnt look bad in the living area of the house. We have two dogs so something that has a good solid stand as well.

Any recommendations are appreciate.

Can you post a photo of the one you have?

Minimally you want an 18 x 18 cage. But rule of thumb, get as large as you can afford. And the bar spacing should be less than one inch.

Anyone have any opinions on this kind?

Ohh.. I like that cage. It's the one that I wanted to save up for before I found Fez's palace.

Nice.

Nice cage. It's similar to the one that I have. What seems to be the trouble with the other cage that you got?

That's a nice cage. Casey has the California cage version of that one but an 18 x 18 . I really do like it (Not like he's ever in the danged thing). That's a pretty good price, and a good size for a quaker. smile.gif

That is the link that was posted with a picture of the cage!

Wow... what a day.

Ive realized that we didnt take long to get attached to our new addition after the last few hours.

Started the day finding out that the cage we THOUGHT was a good deal and a nice size is potentially a danger to him.

Ok, shifting gears we start scouring the net, making calls, trying to figure out all the various bits and pieces that we should concern ourselves with a proper cage.

After a flurry of Internet sites, research and checking with the family finances we found a great place near us in Chicago http://www.windycityparrot.com/ and checked out thier warehouse (pickup prices) http://www.windycityparrot.com/page/Windyc...arrot/CTGY/cage

We saw the 18x18 type Prevue Select and then we listened to all the great advice and pushed our budget as far as we could... we came to this one and I put in a call http://www.windycityparrot.com/Merchant2/m...roduct_Count=15

The guy that runs the place was just outstanding, he told me he had one on the floor in white and while they close at 5pm, he'd make sure they would wait for me. I jetted into the city and not only did he have this one waiting but I got some lessons and tips from him that were incredible... I highly recommend this place.

I slogged through the Chicago Rush hour traffic all the way back home, grabbed dinner and we got the moving crew together and went to work. Here is the results... I hope now we have a safe place for Jake.

Jake seems to like his new Penthouse perch, but he'd rather look at the shadow of a bird on the wall. tongue.gif

I think we did pretty good, he seems to like his new apartment.

You did fantastic! biggrin.gif That is a great cage, and he looks really happy in there! So glad that you took the advice about the old cage - We would have hated for anything to happen for your baby. I mean you saw the pics - They should NOT be selling that cage anymore, but they wont listen sad.gif

WELL DONE biggrin.gif wub.gif

WOW a very nice sturdy and roomy cage Jake is a lucky fid ..
I would add a happy hut /sleeping tent to the top in case your little guy would like to snuggle and rest his legs to sleep or to play/rest many Q.P love them (some do not ) but as Q.P do sleep in a nest in the wild its advised to offer them the choice my boys sleep in a nesting box and its so cute to see then snuggle up and peek out the hole...
they have a happy hut hanging in the family room near a swing they play in and out of ...they are not expensive either ..
Rigger
Yes, we were trying to figure out if one of these was a good thing to add.

Jake has gotten the royal treatment since joining us Saturday night... I think my HUMAN kids are getting jealous, I KNOW the dogs are.

So far we're pleased with the cage, its one piece so we dont have to worry about the dogs toppling it IF they decided to give it a nudge and since its on rollers it will move a bit if they mess with it and that should scare em off a bit but most important.. they cant possibly get in but its within thier vision when they are on the floor and that keeps them from feeling the need to jump up.

Thats a very nice cage...Jake looks quite happy in there!

I thought the maximum bar spacing was 5/8"? Says so here.

Wow, what a great parront you are! What we'll do for the love of our fids happy.gif. Your new cage looks perfect. I'm planning to get a dog this summer (Chesapeake Bay Retriever), so I'm looking for a sturdier cage for Larry Bird. We had a neighbor's Chessie visit and she was very interested in the food at the bottom of Larry's cage (but surprisingly not all that interested in the bird!). It was easy to tell that we'll need a stronger cage to prevent accidents from happening. I can understand now why some parronts bolt their fid's cages to the wall. I hope we don't have to resort to that!

Rosa, I've read this too, and in other places as well. When I bought Larry Bird from the breeder (excellent ppl btw - I really trust their opinions), I did not have a tape measure with me. I bought a model off the floor that the store had recommended. They said it was just perfect for a QP, and it's bar-spacing is 3/4 inch. Larry can get his beak through the bars, but not his whole head. He's had it almost a year now and I don't foresee any problems. It's hard to find a big cage with 5/8" bar spacing. Larry's cage now is 30"w x 31" high x 17.5" deep (it's a dome top) and I don't want to put him in a smaller cage. So in my novice opinion, I think 3/4" is just fine.

I disagree with Majj. Larry's breeder recommended the snuggle buddy thing (not sure what the brand name is) instead of the happy hut. She said it can be hard to get the bird out of the happy hut, and having the snuggle buddy tied to the bars of the cage so they can snuggle with it while they sleep is just as warm for them. Larry loves his.

Here's a link to something like it. Larry has a green one cuz he's a green QP. They recommend getting one the color of your bird.

Couveigh has the same cage. He loves it! He prefers it to Cady's larger cage. Cady's cage has 3/4" spacing and is fine.

Max has a couple stuggle buddies and she loves them. She chews on the strongs though so I cut them off and replaced them with leather strips. I use the leather to tie them to the cage. If she chews on the leather it is fine and I can still get them untied for washing.
