Full Version: Cage Rusting

I have an older cage that is beginning to show some rusting on the hardware and some areas on the cage itself.
I replaced the older hardware with new stainless steel, but my question is what to do about the other rust.

I have a powder coated cage, which I didn't expect to rust but it did. Is that extremely unsafe for my bird?
Also, does anyone have any idea how much it would cost to get the cage re-coated? It is a medium sized cage (22x24x65).

Mainly I wanted to know:

1) What are the health risks from rust? Is it something to be seriously concerned over?

2) If so... would it be more cost effective to buy a new cage or try to get my present cage newly powder coated?

Any info. would be a great help. Thanks!!

I would suggest that you look in your yellow pages under powder coating and call to see what several companies would charge. Be sure to ask them if they sand blast it and if that's included in the price or if it needs to be done before you bring it to them...To do a cage that size probably won't be very expensive.
