Full Version: They're Like Tinker Toys....

Last summer I made the mistake of sitting the fids pvc playstand out on the deck while cleaning their floor. It started raining and the vetwrap got so sticky, I couldn't bring it back in. What a pain to clean up. I had to use baby oil and rubbing alcohol to get all that sticky dried up mess off the pvc. All the pieces ended up in a grocery bag.

Last night I dumped all the pieces out on the floor, and had fun playing with them, just like big old Tinker Toys. It's just taped together at the bottom for now, but Sheila now has a very light, portable playstand to sit on while I do laundry. Some vet wrap for the perching area should finish it up. (Just remember, don't get this stuff wet. If you do, get it off asap.)

Okay, another trip to the hardware store for a few more long lengths and connectors, and more new toys to play with tonight!

Hey Pacos Mom...you made this bird perch look so easy and affordable that I went out and bought the pvc and made my own too....take a look at Robbie and his new perch...Now he can come in the computer room with me instead of screaming his brains out in the living room looking for me....Great idea girl..Thank you...Take a look at my stand and Robbie enjoying it

PacosMom
Hey, Michele. Great Job! It really is easy. Getting the bottom to hold it up, figuring out how to configure it, was the hard part. I kinda stole the idea myself, from one I saw for sale ($40). Sorry, but just a couple of bucks for pvc and fittings is really all it takes! The one that I saw for sale was actually a table top version. That would be just as simple, just shorter!
MicheleB
Haha I saw it on Ebay...did you? and yes I can make a table top one also..I got about another 10 feet left.....I could have bought the pvc in sections but they wanted more for that then the 20 feet...so I opted for the 20 feet...it only cost me $6.09...not bad for a homemade perch considering they sell for $40..thanks girl for the idea....got any idea for the footage..I mean how Robbie can grip on to the tubing..I am using a towel because it seems so easy to wash and put back on..you got any ideas

look at my silly fid (Robbie) eating a BK french fry...BTW...he only gets 1 fry a week...Im afraid of the grease and his stomach

PacosMom
Aww, Robbie is a cutie pie!

If you have some sisal twine, or cotton rope, that can be wrapped around it for a good gripping surface.

Or, you can get what is called Vetwrap. It is used to wrap around horses ankles. It's kind of like a roll of gauze, but stretches and sticks to itself. It's sold at farm supply stores and sometimes petsmart or petco. But, if it gets wet, its real sticky and has to be replaced.

Those are awesome!!! Now when I start working I'm going to get me some PVC and go to work. I need stands in my living room so my fids can hang out in there with us too.
MicheleB
yeah there real easy to make Stacey..You would have to have someone cut the pvc for you at the hardware store...or my hardware store has some already cut...you can just purchase and link together,,,just like Pacos Mom said its kinda like linking logs......

Robbie is enjoying a Christmas cookie with mommmy

and here is Robbie eating his favorite treat....

Hmmm I think we need to put you two guys on the "Best of The Best" list and now when will you start taking orders.....
PacosMom
Okay, here's the first (almost) finished product. Sheila is testing it for me.
She can climb down safely, and back up again. Needs a litte more vetrap.
Maybe one more branch up to hang a chew toy for her.
Next, a smaller version for the quakers!!
