Surprisingly enough I am not a graphic designer and I still know what you mean! :-P Though I was a photographer, so maybe I'm cheating.

No, I don't see the rainbow in Pantone... but I notice the colour of overhead lights more than most...

CMYK is a way to tell a printer exactly what colour you want. C is for Cyan, M for Magenta, Y for Yellow and K for Black...

Pantone is a standardized colour system that lets you make sure you always get the exact same colour... you'll use it in logos and things to make sure the colour of the McDonald's golden arches is always the same. If you google search Pantone you'll be able to see what I mean. It also means you don't have to ship an advertising company a colour sample to match... you just say Pantone ___________, and they can match and print the colour without ever seeing your logo in colour before. It's very helpful.
