My quaker Buddy is now 9 months old - When will he start talking?
Should I work on just one word, or more than one?
He is quite a squaker/mumbler, but so far no words.
I have forgotton how old my other quaker was when he
started to talk.
Thanks for any help!

mumbling is a good sign he is practicing vocals that way.
just use repetition and eventually he will start talking.
There is no set time frame of when they talk and some will only talk in their cages etc...it just a matter of your own quakers personal preference. But once they start their ability to learn new words is amazing.

oatmeal is is about the same age he has a few words but he is a closet talker mostly. He loves to say all his words over and over but usually when no one is in the room.

Hemingway first said "step up," when he was probably 5 months. Now he will say "peekaboo," and "good boy," too. (He is over 8 months.) He doesn't talk a ton but it is quite a hoot when he does. I suspect he practices in his cage during the day. He "whispers" along when I say familiar phrases to him.

Poppy is 6 months old. I bought him at 4 months and he was saying good boy within about 2 weeks. He rarely talks to me, other than "step up good boy" and is mostly a closet talker.
Listen closely... when Buddy i mumbling you might hear a few words you recognize~

It varies from bird to bird. I hear that some say their first word(s) before they are even weaned.. and I've heard of some that don't learn to talk at all. My Don began talking at 6 months, though.
It does sound like Buddy is trying real hard to get something out! Just keep encouraging him and he'll be talking before you know it. happy.gif
Casey's Mom
Hi, It sounds like Buddy is trying to talk, Casey started mumbling first too and then it slowly turned into words.
Casey is almost five months and she learning words really fast, I think. unsure.gif She started when she was around three months, but it is different for all birds.
Most of the words aren't super clear but they are recognizable... like Hi Baby, Peek a Boo, Hi, Hello, what cha doing, bye... anothers she is still working on, like "Where's Casey" when we play peek a boo, and so far she has "ere's C eeeee"! laugh.gif And yesterday someone in the house said we were out of vanilla and Casey from the other room yelled "Vanilla?"... again, it wasn't super clear, but it was definietly vanilla! laugh.gif So it shows that they don't always need repetition to learn a word!

Any day now a word will just pop out of Buddy's mouth, and you'll be super proud! Especially since he is mumbling and getting prepared to talk! Just keep talking to him and make everything sound exciting! Just remember that all birds, like kids, are different and they will do it when they are ready... smile.gif

Okay, that is probably more than anyone wanted to hear, but anywho... Good Luck!
Lena
My Poe started talking before she was 4 months. I think it was around 9 or 10 weeks.

Levi is about 9 - 10 weeks and this morning he came out with "levi good boy"
It wasn't completely clear, but clear enough to know what he said.

Thats the first thing he's said and hasnt said it again since ,but he spends ALOT of time practicing in his cage.

I think he's tried saying hello a few times, but its never come out quite right.
Cheekys mum
Cheeky started talking a week after he first came home just weaned from the breeder.

What does the mumbling sound like in a quaker. I THINK mine is mumbling but I'm not sure what it sounds like in a quaker O.o

Louie is also a closet talker. The only thing he has said directly to me is 'thank you and mimicks my laugh. But I have caught him saying a number of things when he was alone in the room, which really surprised me. Louie is going on 4 months old now.

Thanks everyone! I listened really close this weekend, and boy he is
really mumbling, it sounds like he is mumbling a whole sentence.
He does mimic my duck quack and he is very, very vocal all day long.
I can not wait to hear what the first real word will be.
Thanks again!

My Zeke is 8 months old. He mumbles a lot too. Occasionally we hear a word. We've actually heard lots of words. But he only says them once than moves on to practice something else. I've never heard him say the same word more than once. He has what sounds like a wolf whistle that we believe is my "Right now!" cuz I'm saying it to the kids all the time. That I hear all the time so I just repeat Right Now when I hear him.
My mom got one of those Easter chicks that you hold the bottom and it makes a peep peep sound. Zeke imitated it perfectly right away then preceeded to yell at it every time he heard it afterwards.
He's funny, still waiting to have a conversation with him, though.
