This morning before my real job I did a shift at the shelter.
One of the most common of questions on the application to adopt is your reason for wanting a bird. Today I read a funny answer on the form "I am a divorcee who has given up on men because they suck and want to spend the rest of my life and money with a companion parrot who isnt going to lie and cheat on me"
Ok so maybe you had to be there but I thought it was kind of funny. Needless to say she was approved and adopted a lovely tiel who I am thinking is going to be spoiled rotten.

That's a great answer! It does sound like the bird will have a great time with her.

I wanted one because I "thought" I would have more freedom than I would with a cat or dog. HA!
I would say I have less than even with a dog!!!

I like that woman's answer.
I got my first bird because I wanted a pet that was going to live with me for a looooong time. I wanted a buddy to grow old with. That way we can get cranky together.

That woman's answer was great!

I'm not really certain why I got my birds. I guess I had owned just about every other kind of animal and nothing totally clicked. Needless to say, birds solved that problem!

I can't imagine life without them now.

LOL...that was a good answer. I have no idea why I got my birds to be honest. LOL I adore them, but when I honestly sit and think about it...I mean like I didn't already have enough to take care of around here between the dogs, the kid, the hubby, and the cat.

I liked it too it was def different than the usual reasons...'did my research felt this bird would be good for me etc'.

I know what you mean 100%. I take on way too much for my own good but then again its better than being bored I guess although I have yet to experience sheer boredom anyways. Yet I think sometimes I am totally nuts...went to target today on my way home for example...spent 130 dollars..not on anything cool...oh hell no...I got a new broom, laundry soap, cleaning cloths etc!!!! I think I need to make a name tag that says 'maid'

That was a GREAT answer! Good for her having the ability to make a commitment to another living thing!
The reason I (we) got our first bird is because he needed to be rehomed and my hubby and I had always wanted a parrot of some type. We felt we had the adequate resources and could give Frankie a ton of love ... and we were right!
The reason I (we) got our second bird ...
well it needed to be rehomed ...

I loved the ladies answer, that was cute and honest.....
The reason for getting Kiwi, well most of you know. Hubby bought Kiwi to help me after I lost my Son.
The reason for getting Gidget, my 2nd bird, well once again I have to blame that on this forum and GAIL. But if definitely is a good blame

LOL!

I got Cooper and eventually Buttons to ease my loneliness after my mom died and because my husband and I don't have any kids. Jeff's not exactly a social butterfly either so my fids and I hang together when Jeff's doing his own thing.
And what GREAT companions they are!

Hmmmmmm me and this woman have several things in common
I got my first bird because a guy I was dating knew I would LOVE parrots. Boy, was he right!!! I'd never been around birds before and, in fact, didn't even handle a bird until 2 days prior to picking up the Cockatiel that I had purchased (sight unseen).

Hmm.. I got our first bird because my sister and I lived together in an apartment and the only type of animal we could get permission for was a bird. And we had always wanted a bird. Hehe, sneaky us, we got the bird the day before my then boyfriend/now husband moved in with us. Figured he wasn't technically living with us, so hey we got our pet! The second bird, well she needed a home so we got her a few months later. Fortuneately my husband has a good sense of humor and didn't mind too much. (Now four cats later and a baby that finally satisfied that biological clock thing)

He is kinda wondering what he was thinking hehe.

I have always loved birds, ever since I was 7 and 8 helping to take care of large birds. I had some small ones when I was a teenager, but my Mom gave them away when I moved out (not because I wasn't taking care of them, she was mean and vindictive in those days). I didn't think to get another one because from 16-21 I was pretty transient, travelling around a lot and going between Edmonton and Calgary so I didn't really have time for anything but my cat. I moved to Edmonton, started to live a pretty stable and normal life, not moving every 6 months like I had before.
I was at a co workers house one night and she had doves, about 3 babies and a mated pair. I totally took to the female mama and it made me remember how much I enjoyed having birds around. She was going to give me the mated pair, I mentioned this to a friend. As it turned out, a coworker of his was moving to Korea and couldn't take her bird due to avian flu. I said I would be interested in adopting a parrot, I figured it would be really nice to have a new companion. So I went to meet him, and he loved me, he was purring for me and cuddling w/ me immediately! He had a couple other suitors but he liked me the most so I was the lucky recipient!
To make a long story short, I have always really loved the company of birds, so Quincy became the one to fill that spot!

LOL nothing like being honest!
I got Cheeky b/c my husband watches too much telly. (all the time) He has always missed his budgie that died. (teflon stove fire) I thought a QP would be a wonderful outlet and fun as well. Then I got our Sun conure b/c I love the suns plus she is a companion bird for Cheeky.

at least she was honest
The first pet I ever had was a pigeon..my grandfather used to raise homing pigeons and gave me one when I was 4 so I could start learning how to take care of animals and from there the birds in my life just kept coming...so for me having a bird is one of those situations that where I don't feel whole without (at least) one in my life

from what i know, Rose has health problems and is unable to carry a kid to full term. She has accepted this and loves to care for birds,(and large finned marine mammals)
Rose always had been round birds since she was like 9 or ten her first bird was Lily acherry headed conure and from what i heard evil to everyone except rose. she says always cheerfully: God has a plan for everyone, for most women it to have a kid, but i got the special plan!! its to own and care for god's most beautiful creatures. Someone to call my own to hear and love everyday. To give kissies to, To hang out with me when i take a walk or even just cuddle while watching a movie and to cheer me up when i need it, a baby cant do that. I love when they learn their first words and when they learn to fly, their so smart and fast learners. Plus who can not love a green ball of fluffy feathers with those big eyes saying' take me home, love me, im all yours. These birds are my Fid's and i accept anyone that comes into my life, stray, wild or rescue, i love them all.'
and she really does, her friends call her 'snow white' because its like animals flock to her, i say its her bright personality that animals love. She's rescued 10 birds 4 of the QP's and they all loved her no matter how mean they were in the first few weeks, they seem to respond to her it's amazing..lol
