OK so I have been thinking about this for months. I keep seeing this little carton of grass called "Wheat Grass" in the cooler of the produce section of the local supermarket. It has a picture of a cat on the tag stuck into the material it is growing in, but it says it is "pet grass". I bought it and now it is sittling in the fridge.

I have already Googled this item, it apparently it is not only safe but it is good for parrots. A few question:

1. Does anyone have any experience with this stuff?

2. How do you serve it. When I showed it to Maxie, he got scared and ran away from it. So I assume you need to to cut it up and serve it in another way.

3. Do you have to wash it first. I think it is grown organically and without chemicals, but I don't know

So....any info you all can provide woud be appreciated...Thanks

Idealy is to snip some off and offer it in their dish...I know people that just put it into the bottom of the cage, container and all. But yes...Wheat grass is very healthy, I have been contemplating growing some myself.

I've given it to my finches and just put the whole container in the bottom of their cage...they absolutely Loved it....mowed it off in just over a day. Take it back out and put it in a sunny window and keep it watered and it will grow again....after 3 times toss it...

I have tried it with both of my birds and neither of them would touch the stuff. I tried putting in in the bottom of the cage, sprinkling peices in their dishes, weaving them around the cage..everything I could think of. I think I ended up giving it to the cats laugh.gif

just thought i'd share wink.gif you'll have to let us know if Maxie enjoys it..

I've tried the wheat grass and doing my own sprouting. Neither Max nor the Conures have showed any interest. But the Tiels!!! OOOOOhhhhhhhh they just loooooove this stuff.

Maxie is scared to all hell of it. He runs as far as he can from it. So I cut off a few and put them in his dish. He just ran it through his beak like he was preening his feathers. Then he licked it a few times, but all of it ended up on the bottom of the cage.

I think after servicing the cage tomorrow, I'll stick it on the bottom of the cage. If is there for a while, I'm sure Maxie will investigate it. Who knows? Maybe he will actually chom on it a bit.

As of now, he really does not eat many fruits or veggies. The only veg he LOVES, is Raw sweet potatoes. I put it on a skewer and he loves it. We shall see.
