I recently added a blue male to my little flock of two greens. My friend and I each bought blues from the same clutch. She took the female because my birds would not tolerate the female AT ALL. I hand-raised my oldest green (Chicken) and it will not have anything to do with the others, so it has its own cage all to itself. It only loves Momma. The second green Chewy (sex unknown) fell head over heels for the new blue male (Sky), and they are inseparable. Sky is too young to know what sex is all about, but Chewy seems to know exactly what the deal is. But Chewy is acting like a male to Sky. Has anyone ever encountered this behavior? Could Chewy be demonstrating what Sky should do, or is Chewy ummmmm....strange?

It isn't unusual for two males to attempt to mate. I've seen it happen quite a bit actually. What is really funny is when they are both adults and they both want to act the male part...imagine two birds trying to climb on to each other's backs laugh.gif laugh.gif

Birds don't much care about gender wink.gif Male or female-- if it's green or blue with a grey face and feathery, it's fair game.

what gets funny is when we have these handfed babies, who have never really learned what they're SUPPOSED to do, so they have to figure it all out themselves. Usually, the male regurges to the female to show that he's a good provider, and its all taken from there. The female never regurges for the male. But my Sassy (definitely a female-- she's smaller and smoother all over) often regurges to Rico (definitely male. he's broader and rougher of feathers). And rico just LOVES that! He sees nothing wrong with that.

But I'm not going to let them breed because they're MY companions. I like having birds I can fluff and hold and be friends with. Also, I dont want to worry about Sassy getting eggbound or calcium deficient.
