OliverQP
I have been coming to quaker parrots for almost 8 months enjoying the topics and videos. I have a 5 month old quaker who i love to death.
We bought the cage and everything back in August/sept. but almost backed out because it does get depressing looking at an empty cage, however, when the breeder left a message that there was a new hatching (in October) I wasted no time and put the deposit down. i did not get to meet my Oliver until he was 6 weeks old, he picked us out. we went as much as possible to bond with him. we were able to bring him home at 10 weeks.
it was so hard to leave him in the cage the first day.

he started talking around 31/2 4 months. He says pretty bird and you're good boy, he gives kisses and then says thank you. he is starting to say other things too that i can't quite make out yet.
he loves cucumbers, broccoli and apples.
he wants whatever i'm eating
but he knows to ask first by nodding his head
there are times when he frustrates me but he makes up for it when he is hanging upside down in his cage laughing at who knows what.

he loves to sit and watch t.v. with me, especially if i make him popcorn, lOl laugh.gif
he is just the best!!!

Oh they are wonderful arent they! It sounds like your QP will continue to talk up a storm! It seems once they start they just take off with speech. My QP is 1 now and he speaks 80 words and phrases now. The ability of speech with them is endless! Welcome to the forum! Its a wonderful place here and the information is spot on! I love this place too! laugh.gif

Welcome to both of you! Sounds like you will indeed have a good talker on your hands. My Kiwi will be three in June and still does not talk very much. Except of course when he does'nt think anyone is in the room with him. Then he does his evil laugh, countless uh ohs and clicking noises. I guess he thinks there is no need to talk when I'm in the room with him. I do enough talking for the both of us! Anyway, we are very glad you joined. As you already know by now, you have a great support system here.

I actually do have a question. I brought Oliver to get his wings and nails clipped yesterday and they said that he is getting plenty of vitimans as his nails were nice and strong but they could feel his breast bone. Is this unusal? Is there anything i can do?
Casey's Mom
Welcome to the most addicting site on the internet! laugh.gif Oliver sounds like a cutie. wub.gif Our Casey is five months too! (she hatched the end of October) smile.gif

I thought that you were suppose to be able to feel the breastbone, if you couldn't they were a little overweight?! unsure.gif I think I can feel Casey's, but right now she is wondering why I am feeling her!
Somebody else with more experience should be around shortly to clarify that...

Again, Welcome! smile.gif
Uncle Zippy
Welcome(officially)to QP.com.

The keel(breast)bone is one of the indicators of bird health. In a healthy bird you should just feel the keel bone down the middle of a birds breast. The surrounding flesh should be well developed, but not so much so you can't feel the keel bone. That would be an overweight bird. If the keel is prominent and the surrounding flesh thin feeling, you probably have an underweight bird.

It's a tough balance judging healthy from not. Have a vet do the initial assesment and using that in conjuction with a reliable gram scale, you can judge when/if your bird gains or loses weight.

If you need to fatten him up a a bit you can add limited amounts of nuts, seeds, also pasta, grains and well cooked chicken or beef.

Again, welcome to the flock.

Uncle Zippy hit it right on...You should be able to feel the keel but it shouldn't protrude a lot...there should be good tone in the tissue beside the keel and it shouldn't be squishy...

What kind of diet do you have Oliver on? Pellets I hope with fruit and veggies and a variety of other foods as well. As you as he is just keep introducing new things to him over and over so he gets used to seeing them and then if need be eat things in front of him so he's more apt to try them.
