Here are my new little possums, Caesar and Castro, settling into their new cage.

They've been tucking into their seed but don't seem keen on their vegetables - typical boys.

I've found they prefer sitting on perches to climbing around the bars and hanging from ropes and swings - is this typical?

Handsome little guys!

Typical? Hmmmm so far I have found NOTHING is typical for a quaker. smile.gif They do seem to follow their own minds. I decided a long time ago that whatever Kiwi does is what he will do. He definitely does his own thing! I just sit back and enjoy the ride. As long as he is happy and healthy, I am a satisfied mommy! Oh but how I do wish he would talk more!

Welcome to the forum Chrissy!

Your boys are very handsome! I agree with Teresa they do what they want to do, but our Quaker Casey also prefers sitting on perches, but she is gradually figuring out she can climb down the side of the bars and hang on toys... give them time and they will learn fast! ... how long have you had them? unsure.gif

Again, I don't know how long you have had them but it takes a while to learn to like new things, we have had Casey since January and she is still trying new veggies. smile.gif Also, the seed, is that the basis of their diet? unsure.gif Just wondering, it is usually recommended that a pelleted diet is best because seeds can lead to fatty liver disease etc. Just curious! biggrin.gif

Again, Welcome to the most addicting place on the internet! laugh.gif

I've had them only five days now, so I'm told they change greatly in the first week in a new home.

The breeder had them just on seeds, which concerned me, because they're not used to eating pellets or veggies. But I'm trying to gradually change them over from seed to pellets, so I'm decreasing the proportion of seed and increasing the proportion of pellets, and hopefully this will work. They're not showing much interest in the pellets so far. I'll keep giving them the pellets and the veggies and hopefully when they get more comfortable they'll give the new foods a go.

Is this the best way to get them hooked on the healthy foods?

Yep, with new fruits and veggies you just have to be persistant and keep offering them in different ways. Sometimes they won't eat them for weeks and then one day they will love them, so just keep trying! smile.gif Some usual favourite are sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, papaya, corn ...

As for the conversion to pellets Andie has a great "Conversion Method" pinned at the top of the "health and diet" section. But it sounds like what your doing should work too.

Good Luck and Congrats on the new babies! smile.gif

Welcome to the Forum and Congratulations on your pretty blues......are you going to use them for breeding? I guess I should ask if they are male and female. The reason I ask is if you want them to bond to you, you might want to separate them. As far as the food, repetition, patience is the key. They eventually will get the hang of it.

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone. You're all very kind.

They're both boys, chosen specifically not to breed, nor produce eggs, it just seemed easier to me, and I was concerned about a brother and sister breeding and the obvious difficulties involved.

So it's a bachelor pad they have there, and they seem to be settling in. I'm beginning to suspect they didn't have much human conact from their breeder, but they're coming around.

Does anyone else have a pair?

Congratulations on your beautiful blue boys.....Nothing like a blue....

By the way, it seems a lot of people in Australia have more blues than greens....They must be plentiful over there.....Majj on here has a beautfiul blue named Buddy, I believe....

Thanks for the pictures.....

I knew where you were from immediately when I read this. I love the "tucking into" wording! Does that sound nuts or what, but I think it's so expressive! Sorry... but I liked it. Anyway, welcome to the forum! This is a great place to be! Glad to have you and your fids!

Good news on the boys, they seem to have "discovered" their pellets. Certainly Caesar is now eating the pellets to the exclusion of the seeds I'm weaning them off, but Castro still seems a little reluctant. However Caesar seems to be the flock leader, so I'm hopeful Castro will soon join in.

No luck with the fruit and vegetables yet, but I will persist and try to be creative in presentation.

Robin'sGirl, you must have spent some time Down Under! I guess it is a local turn of phrase, I wasn't really conscious of it.

Oh yeah, and there are quite a lot of blues in Australia. I'd say they're at least a scommon as the greens, although they're generally sold for about $150 extra, from what I've seen in classifieds.

Are blues hard to come across in USA?
