I get a phone call this morning. It's my sister asking me if I want another bird? Apparently a friend of hers had two-mini macaws (not sure yet which kind) and one died (gonna find out of what) and she wants to give the other one away. They can't give him (not sure if they're calling it a him or they've had him sexed..finding that out too) the attention he needs and wants to see him go to a good home. She's has two big cages (I would only need one) and my sister said she's pretty sure she just wants him to go to a good home and she's not sure if she wants anything for the cage or if I took the bird she may just give me the cage. Soooooo I'm waiting to find out. Gave my sister a list of questions to ask. But now I'm all excited. Hopefully maybe I'll get him this weekend. My hubby is gonna be thrilled

. lol! But he know's I've been wanting another bird. And I've just not taken the plunge yet cause of the $$. So if it's free he can't grip too much. So any advice with a mini macaw? I've already begun research. I just hope Brady doesn't get too jealous. But he's my baby and no one will take his place. I will try to not change much about his life so he wont be upset.

The lady is gonna be sending my sister a picture..so I will post it when I get it!

Ok...found out some more info. His name is Nugget (lol). He's 3-4 yrs old. He was talking but after the other bird died he seem to stop. No doubt upset. The other bird had a tumor (poor thing)! I'm awaiting a pic. Geez ..I'm like a little kid waiting to get a present. lol

Thanks..I'm trying not to think about it cause it makes me want to run over to this ladies house and get him. lol. I've noticed some people here have switched their fids name..perhaps maybe because they found out he was a she...but anyhow..is that a good idea? Nugget is kinda cute..but I was thinking about changing it. He is 3-4 yrs old. I was thinking if he didn't really respond to his name ..I could change it. Wadda ya guys think?

Here's a pic of Nugget. I believe he's a yellow neck/nape Mini Macaw. I got the pics this morning. I definitely want him. However I do not want the cage. It's pretty beat up..and they were asking $200 for it..but it was negotiable . But still I want to get him a new one. You can't tell how bad it is in this pick. But it's bad. The cage is bare. Nothing in ther ebut two perchs. I don't see any toys except two old one on the top. Poor baby. Not sure when I'll get him..but hopefully soon.

He's a cutie.
Make sure you keep us posted! Good luck.
Oh, and I like the name Nugget, too. From everything I've learned you CAN change the name but it's not really advisable. If you do, change it do something that sounds similar(like Tugget, for a bad example).

Well it looks like I could get Nugget as soon as Tuesday.I'm going cage shopping today. I also found out that Nugget is on a all seed diet..*sigh*..and I don't believe he's ever seen a fresh veggie or fruit. All I heard about was the seed diet and he likes crackers with a little peanut butter on em. So I have some work ahead of me. But I don't mind. Yea the name Nugget is growing on me. I'm hoping to find a good deal today. I've found some really nice cages on Ebay but I would have to wait for Fedex to deliver it..so I'm hoping to find something I could take home today. This place hooked me up with a pretty nice used cage for Brady for $15...I know I wont get that lucky again and I need a bigger one...but hopefully I'll make out good. Makes me mad..I have seen nice cages (too big for brady) when I've gone there in the past for Bradys food or whatever and thought oh what a good deal..but I had no need. Now I have the need..lol!

Nugget is SO cute, congrats!

I agree with the cage though lol he needs a new home...and don't worry about getting him to eat more healthy...he'll come around once he sees how much better fruits and veggies taste and how boring its been for him just eating seeds

Nugget is a Yellow Collar Mini Macaw and they are GREAT birds Andie's Newton is also a Yellow collar... One of the smaller of the mini's You're very lucky to be getting him....Sweet disposition from what I've experienced....pretty good talkers They are pretty good acrobats too.
I think Nugget is a great name, I don't think I'd change it if it were me. He's going to be dealing with a lot of change and changing a name might be pretty confusing to him. But has been said...its your call!

Ok ..Nugget is coming home today! Yea! I learned he's on Harrison's seed mix...and apparently he's got a lot of it for me. Which is good. I think I will introduce some pellets..and try a mix of both ..eventually being more pellet than seed. And I found out he does like some fruits and veggies..but it doesn't seem like it was a big part of his diet. I'm very excited. I'm glad to hear Andie has one so I have someone to look to for advice. I was hoping that he would be a yellow collar...and was excited when I saw the pics. From my understanding he was talking but not so much that his buddy is gone. So I'm hoping with lots of attention from us..and Brady being around...he'll start up again. Oh btw..we're not so sure it's a him. They never had him tested. I'm thinking of doing a dna test on both Brady and Nugget.
I kinda agree. I'm not crazy about the name nugget..it's growing on me..but I don't think I'll change it. It would be different if he was a baby..but he's 3-4 yrs old and I don't think it's such a good idea.
This guy is fully flighted so when we go pick him up we're heading straight to get his wings..and maybe nails ...trimmed. That way he's all set when he comes home. The guy says he's a great bird..snuggles with his wife. Seems to prefer the wife more. So hoping he'll like me as his new Mommy. I spoil my animals so much..I'm sure I'll win him over. My hubby says I turn all my animals into big babies. LOL!
So Brady's world is gonna get turned up side down today. He's seen the new cage sitting there..and I've showed him Nuggets pic and keep asking him if he wants a friend...lmao! I even attached the pic to the cage and told him this is nuggets cage.
The guy seemed a little disappointed I didn't want his cage..but ugh..it's so unsightly ..even if it's still in good condition with the paint exception. But ugh..I couldn't do it. We got a great deal..on a nice big cage.
I will post a pic of Nugget in his new home later today. I'm going to get him at 1p today.

Well...we made it through the first night. Both birds are in their cages covered. I don't know if Nugget is use to getting covered but he hasn't made a peep. He seems to be adjusting well. He ate a little and drank a little. So he must not be too stressed out. I just keep talking to him and I petted his foot that he had on the bars of the cage. But when hubby goes near the cage he gets nervous and backs up. He didn't like the previous owners hubby so I wonder if he's sensing this is a male and I don't like him either. He doesn't do it to me or my daughter. We'll have to work on it.
Brady acted pretty good. He was just very interested in Nugget and wanted to go over to his cage. He kept a close eye on the cage from across the room on his play gym. He wanted to know who this new guy was. I took a few pics of Nugget in his new cage and I will post em tomorrow. Oh and we took him right away to get his nails and wings clipped. I imagine it's gonna take some work to get him to not take off and try to fly. He's gonna be like..hey...these wings use to work?? what happened. LOL!

Last night went well. I uncovered the boys this morning and both ate their breakfast. Nugget didn't make a peep all night. I keep talking to him and saying his name...he's now playing with one of his new toys. So how long do I wait before I try to handle him? He'll let me touch his foot if it's on the bar...so I guess that's a good sign.

I'd say- full speed ahead! You never know if he'll let you until you try- but then- I'm very impatient. My method usually works really well if it works or fails spectacularly. But he sounds like he's settling in ok. I don't see why you shouldn't try to get him out. No fear, though- no hesitancy! Just act like it is completely natural that you be taking him from his cage. Being a bigger birdie, though- you might want to give yourself a bit of protection like a long-sleeved shirt so you're more confident.

LOL...good point! His beak is much bigger than Brady's but not so big I'm intimidated. The only beaks that do that to me are the big macaws and the big too's. Maybe I'll try offering a grape to him..see if he'll take it from my hand..little peace offering..lol!
Ha...it worked..he took it from me..he was alittle hesitant at first..but he took it...I'll let him eat it..and then we'll proceed...

Apr 4 2007, 10:48 AM
Yes i moved Brady's cage into our room last night. i also moved his play gym just now. Last night it was in the living room and Nugget is in the dining room..and Brady had sight of the cage but was a good ways away..but I figured I should move it even further. with hubby laid off (yes we got this news the other night..but with the excitement of nugget coming home I hadn't talked about it)Brady can be down in our bedroom cause he wont be sleeping all day. Well he can try but Brady wont let anyone sleep past 10a...lol!
I'm taking baby steps with Nugget..he let me pet his back and head just now..we'll try a little more later.
Nope you didn't miss the pics..just about to post em. Had to download em on the other computer...

Congrats

The minis are adorable.Nugget is a beauty !
I am still trying to convince hubby we need a mini

After the last disaster with my macaws and the closet door..its not going so well

May I warn you that not only is there MBS...but I have discovered that macaws cause Macaw Fever? And just like MBS there is no known cure

I jumped right in to handeling my guys.I know people say wait this long..or that long. But I think that you should take full advantage of any "honeymoon" period..that way when he discovers that he is staying were he is...he will already have an idea that you are not a bad person..make sense?

Yea that makes sense..I'm gonna go try now to get him to step up. Oh btw..I would of kept him in the bedroom instead of Brady..but there is no room for that big cage. I can put brady's on my desk back here. I plan on spending lots of time down here instead of in the living room. I'm still trying to figure out how I can switch it around because Brady is use to being in the living room. Or do you think if one is in the living room and the other in the dining will that be ok?
Ya know..I just got my 2nd bird and yesterday we're in the bird store..and there's a baby ringneck..omg he/she was so cute. It came right up to the glass to see us and was doing the baby bob..my daughter loved it. Ugh..one at a time Sue ..one at a time!

Welp I got my first pretty good bite from Nugget

(no blood but skin removed..lol) He was letting me pet him and then he just decided to give me a good one! Oh well I'll keep at it and I know it's gonna take some time. I love how his owners thought he would just come right to me..lol! I knew better though. I don't believe he was handled a lot. I know he didn't like the guy..and the guy favored the other bird. So it was just the wife..and I don't know how much time she spent with him. But I know she said he would step up to her and cuddle. So it'll just take some time..and some bribes...I think Brady could tell I was sad. I went to the bedroom. And he climbed up on my shoulder and cuddled.

Remember to wash your hands and possibly change clothes between birds- otherwise the quarantine doesn't work. (From Nugget to Brady, vice versa should be fine- you know Brady is healthy).

thanks! Yea I'm gonna bribe him some more today. Last night he let me pet him some more before he got covered for the night. He also regurgitated some food for me..gross but sweet I guess. I have to remember also it's that season and hormones are gonna play a role. Brady has seemed to calm down ..he was being nippy a few weeks ago. I know it'll take time before he trusts me and takes to me like Brady.

Yea I have been washing my hands..and so far..Nugget hasn't come close to getting on my clothes..lol! We'll see how today goes. Maybe I'll go get some walnuts or something yummy. The said he liked peanut butter on crackers but he didn't seem to want it. He did like the grapes though.
