Full Version: High Priced Bird...

I just got off the telephone with my mum. She lives just west of Edmonton, Alberta and was in the big city today at West Edmonton Mall. She was telling me about this pet store that just changed locations in the mall and her and my dad went in to check it out.

Talk about high prices!!!

Mum said she saw a 'white bird with a pink crest'...I told her that it was probably a Moluccan Cockatoo and she said yep, thats what the sign said. She said the bird was priced at...and get this...$14,999.99!!!!!!! I was like WHAT?????? Talk about over priced!!!!

Which is sad, because you know no one will purchase that bird at that price. One on hand, it is a good thing...curbs any spur-of-the-moment spenders, and those who don't know much about birds. But on the other hand, an experienced parrot owner knows that they can get a M2 for less than $15,000.00! So I'm thinking that poor guy is going to sit there for a long time.

And it wasn't just the birds, Mum said that they had a Sheltie mix puppy that was priced at $1,999.99 and Beagles priced at $2,400.00.

That is just total craziness and makes me just shake my head. Makes you wonder how this store stays afloat.

so are these canadian dollars? Just curious

Hmmm.... was this PJ's by chance? I always remember them as being high priced but that's insane. I also heard a rumour that they'd been bought by Petco, not sure if it's true though

They obviously don't want to sell many birds or pets for that matter do they? $2,000.00 for a Moluccan here in the states is High...Good lord...

I agree with you though Carrie...on one hand its a good thing to keep the Impulse buyers from taking home a bird they know nothing about other than its pretty...But that bird will probably sit in that shop and get traumatized by all the people and kids poking fingers and ewwwwing and ahhhing over it...Poor bird.

Yep, Canadian dollars which is about 13,000.00 US. Catherine, it was PJs. They are really over-priced. I remember being there a few years ago and just flabergasted at what they wanted for Quakers (it was just before I purchased Max). I remember thinking 'I'm buying my Q for 400 and you're charging over 1,000.00??'. blink.gif

That is very over priced! ohmy.gif
But I think you would be surprised at people who can afford birds that expensive. We had a Hyacinth Macaw in our local pet store (NOT a PJ's) for $20,000 and it was only there for about a month before it was sold. We know people that work there and he went to a good home. smile.gif

I do feel sorry for birds that sit in pet stores though. We have a Blue and Gold in our pet store right now and he's been there for a while and last week when we were there, there was some crazy lady in there sticking her little tiny poodle X's foot in the cage to say "hi" to the bird! Crazy! We told someone who worked there and she told her to leave the bird area and so she went on to the small animals to take the bunnies out of the cage to visit with her dog on the floor... then she was kicked out again... dry.gif Crazy people!

But I do agree... PJ's is completely overpriced, I don't know how anyone can afford to shop there! laugh.gif

That is crazy! Here a Too is about $1400..and I've seen puppies from $800 - $1200..but tens of thousands? are they nuts?? More so who are the people buying them? Those would be the true loonies (ha..no pun intended ..cause the Canadian dollar is the looney right? lol)

You know, 20,000 for a Hyacinth at a pet store is actually a really good deal!! There is a breeder in Alberta who sells his Hyacinths at around 15,000. So the pet store price isn't really that bad.

Yeah, I know it's not that bad for a Hyacinth... but it shows that people will spend that much on a bird from a pet store. smile.gif ... always cheaper to go to the breeders! smile.gif

PJ's must make soooo much profit!
