Full Version: Males, Females And Hormones...

I know this is a topic that has been talked about over and over again, but I'm a bit puzzled here.

About the males. I was thinking of the self "intertainment" part... Is it really that terrible? Are they doing it all day long nonstop blink.gif or how often does this happen? I'm not a very "prude" person and I find it hard to believe, that it could be that bad of a problem...

And about the spring in all. I've been reading, that it can affect very strongly on a male's behavior, but what about femails? How does the spring affect on them (laying eggs, defending of the cage, what else?)? Do they have some other kind of hormonal "problems" that a new bird person should be aware of?

I'd like to have a realistic picture of what it is to live with male/female queker. What are main differences in behavior?

When birds reach sexual maturity and the days begin to get longer is signals in their brain its time to mate.
I havent really seen major differences in males desire vs females desire other than the behavior seems to vary from year to year.
This year for example has been a stronger desire to mate year for my quaker dna'd male and he has been loud and frequent for the past month but now the desire is slowing down and I am pretty sure he is almost over it.
The other thing that can happen is the bird becomes nippy and not as complacient or appears grumpy. Its pretty temporary but when ppl witness it for the first time it takes them aback because they were so used to their loving fid. That too is temporary.
I havent really seen female quakers have egg laying issues as much as I have seen tiels that continue to lay infertile eggs and the vets will administer hormone shots if it gets too bad.
With everything there are always exceptions to the rule. I have seen some birds where this time of the year doesnt phase them at all (I can never say it wont happen because who knows as the variables are so great when it comes to the rites of spring) my sun for example who has reached sexual maturity has yet to show signs of mating.
I dont think its bad in the sense that its the end of the world when it comes to such behaviors. You see it once, understand why and it pretty much becomes old hat. I just find it interesting as well as comical sometimes given my quakers love interest is a toy with a bell so when I hear it ringing like crazy I def know what he is up too lol.
Its a part of nature for them to do this and the only time I would deter them from the deed is if they attempted to try their affections of amor on me.
