I am sorry, but I think that is disgusting to let your bird get in your ear like that.
There is so much bacteria and other things that your bird can get. I am sure that you meant well posting it, but this is just my opinion.......it is just not healthy!!!!
Arlene
I would never let that happen with my bird. Too many poisons exit our skin which is our biggest organ. It is totally not a safe thing to do.

Levi, this post was not meant for you to attack me. I was just stating my opinion. It is not something I would do. You didn't need to be rude in your response to me.

It just might have been your choice of words I found to be a bit offensive.

On a side note..

There is absolutely no way to keep our babies 100% safe from every possible danger. None. I take every possible step to insure my babies personal safety but I also "choose" to allow them to live and enjoy things in the world of captivity. A world they never asked to be a part of.

I can't believe what I just read...Hmmm...Great day....I don't understand why this thread took a turn the opposite way....

I have always wondered why these little chickens like our ears...while watching that, it reminded me of what I saw Harley doing to Steve this evening; the same thing and then he latched down on his ear and made his papa holler...They do love to explore with that little fat tongue finding the way...

Maybe it is the way the ear is made but I can say one thing, they sure check every little chamber out....

Ouchie!! Ge got him good did he? Hope Harley spares him next go round laugh.gif I dread the day Echo does decide to test the waters with a nice hard bite to the ear..
I know it is probably more a matter of when, Not if.. But So far I have been lucky.. He is so gentle.. I won't dare Underestimate them by saying they don't know better and that it hurts because Thats exactly how it sppears LOL

What I find weird is he will actually get possessive/protective of my head... Sometimes If I am sitting up and go to lean back against the pillow he will go in all out attack mode flapping his wings and doing the warning growl and striking at it.. Same often applies to other objects which he has no issue with unless he is up there..

That could prolly be linked back to his battle for dominance.. over everything and everyone
never know for sure I guess..

But it is fun... constantly trying to figure out the behaviors and the motives nehind them...

Tiki loves to preen my hair so I am very careful not to wear product in it. Talking about bacteria, I would think that the most contaminated part on your body would either be our mouths, and or our hands. I am a nurse, and wash my hand a lot, but I do not was my hands immediately before handling Tiki, unless I have been doing something just prior. I wonder how many people type away on their key board with their bird on their shoulder or near by then play with them. Unless you are the only person in your house, you have just contaminated your hands on the keys that everyone else has been using. I bath everyday, and don't handle things with my ears..........................although I can wiggle them...................they just sit there listening. Ear wax is a gros thought, but unless water sits in your ears, bacteria rarely over grows. Tiki also will try to get into my nose, so I am very weary of that, I don't like anything going up my nose, well not very often anyway. Tiki now is very careful around my earrings now, and rarely pulls on them. I don't know, I think that sometimes we get a little germaphobic, after all we are talking about an animal that eats dry poop.
My Golden retriever is a prime example of baffling design. When he was a puppy, he would eat any poop that he could find, much to my extreme dismay. One day I took him to my friends farm, and it was an unlimited buffet to him. I also had to put a door on my cats litter box, as he loves kitty rocha. Not once has this ever made him sick. But every time I tried to change his dog food, the recommended way of adding only 1/4 of new stuff for a few days and increasing, he gets terribly sick, with the runs. I does not matter what brand I try, so how do you explain that? I do agree that we want to be as careful as we can, but I also think that our animals get a little resistant to our germs, as the years go on. Kind of like you can drink the water in your area, but if you try to drink water in another town, it can upset your bowels. But I still think allowing them to pick at our teeth is really bad, warm, moist, plaque, yukkkkkkk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!+++++++bacteria.

How did you get Tiki to stop pulling your earrings? I've given up wearing mine at all sad.gif

Both Raven and Yogi have pulled one out, and the fear that one of them might swallow a stud scared me so bad, I gave up wearing them and let the holes close.

I'd love to be able to re-pierce at some point. Hubby bought me beautiful earrings for our anniversary one year. Unfortunately, my ears have to have something in them to keep the holes open. They close in a day or two dry.gif

Paulette I can not explan your Golden blink.gif I have had a pup or two that had that issue and it just grossed me out to the max.

About hair products.. I guess I should stop using the hair gel to style my hair, huh?? laugh.gif

All the talk about QP's and noses has me leary now.. Echo has never really taken an interest in my nose thank God. I hope he never does! That would irk me just a wee bit.

As far as ear rings are concerned I always take mine out when Echo is up there. I am not that gutsy!! I could handle a hard bite or two but to have the ear ring yanked out... Ummm No thanks.. Echo has noticed the brow rings and has taken a strong interest in them so I have to watch him close. He knows they are off limits so he will get all sneeaky like he is snuggling up to my face or preening my side burn area and slowly eases his little beak to them. I have no reason to believe as of yet, that he would yank at them roughly but, just like the ears it just is'nt worth the risk.

Prissy on the other hand has a strong dislike for ears. It is like they are monsters that are gonna eat him. He goes all out into an attack mode every single time I have had him up there dry.gif I guess because he was with my mother for 7 years and never saw ears up close and personal, due to her long hair.

I'd do anything to see the world from their eyes for just one day.

I can not wear studs, or Tiki will go after them. He once pulled one of my diamond studs out, and I had quite a chase to get it back. My husband bought me a pair of small white gold hoops with a little diamond in each one. They are thick, and snap on firmly. Tiki, tried yanking on them a few times but each time I would grab onto the hoop, and hold it so that he couldn't tear my ear, and shake my shoulder up and down. Soon he learned that he couldn't pull on them, and eventually began to think that they were part of my ear. He would, or at least has never bitten my ear. Now, he gives my ear ring a cursory nibble and moves on to my hair, or collar. Although I had to go for an MRI recently so had to remove them, and just haven't put my jewelry back on. I wonder if he will react when I do. I had my ears pierced 30 years ago, and the holes never grow in. I have left my earrings out for months and never have had a problem. Last Sunday I put on a pair of earrings that are hooks with no clasp, and Tiki was so slick that I didn't even know that he had slipped one out until my daughter told me he had it.

I think it is cute! My husband also has a shaved head and Pistachio will sit on his shoulder and preen him. She will pick the little hairs out of his head, off his face and likes to play with his ears.

I think you are right, it must be the way the ear is shaped. We have found that Pistachio likes to pick anything off that looks like it doesn't belong. I find it funny and would love to train her to pluck my eyebrows for me in just the right shape so I don't have to.

Well I'll tell ya something... My bird preens ears, hair... and although I do my best to make sure I wash my hands often... I'm sure there are times when I foget. He's more healthy than I am.(just confirmed by the vet) People need to just quit judging how people take care of their animals around here. If you choose to be "anal" about the care of your bird... more power to you. Don't judge what someone else does, or lets their bird do. It's none of anyones business anyway.

Guess what... I also let him eat things he's not supposed to have occasionally. tongue.gif

Do you keep every little poop dropping wiped up and clean in your bird cage... cause if you don't... they probably have a better chance of picking up bacteria there than on your ear for christ sake.

It's funny... some of the same people complaining about the silliest of things, do things I sure would never do... but I keep my opinions to myself... like... taking a bird outside and letting it walk around on the ground... cooking with a bird loose in the kitchen... leaving it unattended and out of it's cage. God only knows what else... that is alot more dangerous than an ear preening.

Lighten up.

Probably not a good idea... but I'll freely admit I use gel on my wet hair before I dry it... and use a little hair spray... and it hasn't hurt my bird... and he's going on 3 years old. I refuse to be one of those people who worry about every little thing... and over protect.

I like the idea of Ohana's Cluck and Pluck! That had me rollin' on the floor. It acutally could be a really cute bird store name. If I use it I'll be sure to send you some money for the idea!

marylee.....the comment about the hair products from Levi was tongue in cheek.....HE HAS NO HAIR!!! lolol laugh.gif

But hair products for those of us who HAVE hair is probably not a good idea! My fids do the hair surfing thing
sometimes......

As for the ears, my fids check my ears out sometimes and, sad to say, sometimes also want to check out my nose! eeeeeeekkk ohmy.gif Don't know what they think they're looking for up there (boogers maybe?) but I don't 'allow' them free rein when it comes to the nose........get out of there, get out of there!! wacko.gif

Fids sure can check out some of our more strange-looking (to them) body parts. Ever have one go down your shirt and suddenly you feel them checking out something you'd rather they DIDN'T latch onto??? dry.gif lolol

well I'm glad to see someone finally posted that their bird tries to check out their nose LOL....was beginning to think mine was the only one! someone also asked if they were looking for boogers...well in my case I believe he is quite fond of the reaction he gets from doing it....he's a little stinker!! He's just over a year and he is always getting into something. I also catch him looking back at me just to make sure I am watching him when he's doing something naughty....silly bird. He's pretty smart though and is learning the word no...not saying it but knowing he is *supposed* to stop doing whatever he's doing. when he feels like it he listens. It's quite funny having 2 qp's with totally different personalities. My other one is the stressed rescued one and he only loves his momma and just wants to be held and loved on....doesn't ever play. Oh well I guess Kyle makes up for it since he plays enough for 10 qps.
