Full Version: Eating Plastic Toy

I bought Buddy a set of small plastic balls with bells in them. The are not solid, they look
like little cages. Buddy plays with them & shakes them, but now I see he is destroying them,
which I do not mind at all - my question is that I do not see any of the plastic that is missing
from them on the cage bottom. He would not eat it would he?? sad.gif
I took them away because I did not want him to get sick, but I would rather him
destroy the toy than pluck - my last bird was a very bad plucker and every time I see
a feather fly I cringe.
I would not think that they would eat plastic, he always has plenty of pellets, but any
imput would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Jenn & Buddy

Actually, that's a good question. smile.gif If you are talking about those little cat toys, we bought those for Casey, thinking they would be fun, but after she got over the fact that they weren't going to attack her she started picking at them and trying to bit off the plastic. I was worried she would eat it too, so we took them away.
I don't know if they would actually eat it, but I guess anything is possible. I do know that the bells inside can be harmful though and they can get their beaks stuck in them or eat the ringer in the middle.unsure.gif

Basically, I am not sure of the right answer, but I do know that we took them away from Casey for the same reason. wink.gif

Paper is usually something that keeps Casey occupied for a longest time, have you tried that with Buddy? unsure.gif Adding machine tape, crumpled balls of paper, knotted paper towel, folded paper, long twisted sticks of paper... the list of things you can do with paper is endless, and it's funny how they prefer some forms better than others! laugh.gif

Good Luck!

I bought some little balls like that for little Gidget and she started eating the plastic also, so I took it away from her. I would offer crumpled up paper towel or newspaper also maybe some safe wood toys to chew on. JMO

Ok, sounds like I did the right thing by taking them away. I will buy
bigger, more solid plastic toys. I will also try the paper, I know Buddy likes
to play with my napkin at diner. Thanks for the advice.

P.S. for Casey's Mom - where did you get that curved ladder on the outside
of the cage - I really like it, but I have never seen one. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Hi Bonito! smile.gif
I just saw this now! smile.gif We got it a long time ago for our budgies but they haven't used it for a while so we washed it up and gave it to Casey. I'm not sure where you live, but very recently I have seen it at our PetsMart in Canada. smile.gif Casey loves it so much, we use it two ways: upright on the top of the cage, she likes to hang out there during the day, then we switch it up and put it on the side of the cage and she plays around and hangs on it etc.
It's a great toy and apparently a lot of fun just to sleep on during the day or hang around and play with! laugh.gif

Good luck! I think it should be at most pet stores. smile.gif

Thanks Casey's Mom! I live in MA and I do have a local PetSmart - I will check it out.
I think Buddy would love one.

Hee hee, the first thing I noticed about my quakers is I can't give them any easily chewed plastic toys. I too noticed destroyed toys with no bits on the bottom of the cage. uh oh!
