Cosmo & Marti's Mom
Ok, so I am a slacker and i KNOW my birds should get more fresh food, but I fail to get it to them as often as I should..they do share with us mos tof the time though too.
ANyway, So handed out fresh food twice this week, I took it away for a minute to combine the dishes (since they were hanging in teh same cage fora bit) and both freaked out a bit, but was ok when i gave it back of course. SO gave them some more fresh food this morning, well, when I came home from work 'mo had dropped her dish but it hadn't spilled, so i picked it up and put it back, so she attacked the dish, and i switched dishes for her, then she was fine. Well at this point I went to get Marti (almost a year) out of her cage and she bit me, and she rarely bites at all, being so young. She seemed wound up about Cosmo's food (they usually share in 'mo's cage when they share) She had her own dish, and i couldn't get near it either. So I'm thinking i need to give them more (duh) but also just to alleviate this behavior some, like maybe she thinks i'm going to take it or soemthing, not sure though. any thoughts? I hope i explained it well enough. I just don't want her to continue this behavior, because she will be a turd! Cosmo knows her boundries with me and won'[t bite, but Marti hasn't learned that so much yet...

thanks for any suggestions!

uh.. uh.. maybe their used to eating together, you have to be firm with marti since she is testing her boundries. i suggest when you begin cleaning the cages, make sure the birds are away from the cage, in another room? and set up their food and treat bowls before you place them in the cage again. it could just be caged agression or even their in a bad mood cause their not together..

well, they don't live in the same cage, although we let them hang out together sometimes, usually in cosmo's cage (maybe i should rotate more) but she is usually just fine, never any problems with fresh food from your hands or anything like that, pellets are no biggie either. its something to do with the dishes it seems, i am not sure...i'm going to get some different dishes i think, and see if that helps...is so strange!
Quakermom
i think rotating ma be the way to go, you have to remember birdsand colors some they love and some they hate..lol

Interesting, because Poppy has become very aggressive with his food lately. Odd, because he isn't cage aggressive... just his toys and his food.
Cosmo & Marti's Mom
Ok, so she just did it again, but differently a biit.. she and mo were sitting on top of mo's cage and i went to give mo her medicine (oral baytril) i think marti wanted some..so she sort of tried to bite and got alittle aggressive, i pushed into it a couple times and put her in her cage..but sheesh! gotta figure out her thinking and nip this problem in the bud!

I got bit today by taking away the fresh veggies bowl, too. What's up with that?! Could it be a seasonal urge, too? Protecting the food source near "breeding" time. My quaker is 4 years old and she has been getting more protective of that food bowl in the past week. She's more grabby about food in general.

Oh lordy me, I think this may be a birdie thing...I do wonder because Harley is going on 4 years old and he has always tried to nip at me everytime I even put fresh food in his cage...I sat his extra food dish down in the holder....There is a perch on his door and when it swings open he is on it and trying his best to reach my hand/arm..And when I give him a treat, he will grab it real fast..I have tried to get him to say "thank you" until I am blue in the face..But he pays me no mind...

So I don't know what it is about these babies and their food dishes....Wish I did... tongue.gif

It's that time of year. It's hormones. Sydney is doing the same thing. It will pass.
Cosmo & Marti's Mom
yeah, but Marti isn't even a year yet, that is the strange part...
Sandi Kiwis Mom
I am wondering if your birds aren't bonding to each other instead of the hormone issue or the feed dishes? Just a thought. Also, quakers don't like change so if the feed dishes are different or strange to them, that also could be a cause....as I say this......LOL.....Kiwi does the same thing when I go to get his food dishes. Must be a bird thing laugh.gif cuz Gidget does it too.

Well, I know marti likes mo alot, but they do have separate cages and she does this in her own cage, mo likes marti but is a mama's girl first and foremost. and marti is just fine about anything else, regular pellets, water, toys, everything...just fresh food and cosmo's medicine..
