Hi I'm new here and I just have a question. Now I understand that all quakers are different but I just don't know if this is normal. My quaker "Lloyd" seems to be constantly be afraid of water (unless he's drinking it). Everytime I try laying down a small bowl of water for him to bathe in and what not he will just fly onto my shoulders and start squaking as if he's scared of it. I've tried just misting him occasionally yet even from that he just runs away. Is this just the way he is?

Welcome to the Forum! How old is Lloyd? Repetition works real well with quakers. Just keep trying and one day you will be surprised.
Casey's Mom
Welcome to the forum! Sometimes our Q Casey isn't in the water mood and will run away from it too, but then other days she will jump right in. unsure.gif If Lloyd is young then it might just take him time to get used to it. When we first got Casey, after about a week, she jumped into her water dish and splashed around, so when they are ready, they should go in. The water is good for them so hopefully he can figure it out. Have you tried kind of splashing your fingers around in the water and making it look fun? I know it sounds kind of crazy, but it works! laugh.gif Also, have you ever taking him in the shower with you? Some prefer the shower to the baths or misting. unsure.gif

Good Luck and Welcome! smile.gif

paulie's my little killer whale because he loves water he sees me coming with his dish oh my god make sure your wearing a rain coat..lol. but apprently he likes bathing in his water dish too. i usually leave a small dish with water in his cage (not to deep or to warm), he does splashies all the time.. my little shamu..lol he takes a bath almost everyday i try to make it every other day because i dont want him to get sick since the weather changes. he doesnt like the mister too much, so i make surehe gets the Bowl..lol

*by the way the splashy with the fingers works..lol splash yourself too..lol it helps hahahaha

try splashing a little with your fingers, this is what I did for QP Kiwi. Now I call him my "water bug". Every time he hears running water, he wants a bath! He's not into showers, just bathtime! Be patient.

petey doesnt like me to take him out of his cage and try to put him in water.. he freaks out.. so i put a 'bathtub' right in his cage with him, and he loves to give himself a bath.. he usually does it every other day.

Alright well Lloyd is around a year and a half years old now and I've been trying out the whole leave the bowl in front of him and splash around but didn't work out too well rolleyes.gif He's very afraid about pretty much everything. He'll start yelling at anything shiny, big, or pretty much anything he's never seen before. tongue.gif This must be normal right?

Welcome to the forum. Maybe it is no the water he is afraid of but the bowl. Have you tried different types? May or may not work.

Mine likes to bathe in his water dish. I've tried to get him to bathe in another bowl and misting him. Heck, I even put him in the bathtub with the water on lightly. He didn't like any of it. I need to keep trying. You just need persistence smile.gif

try talking to Lloyd and show him how much fun the water is. I am sure if you keep doing this everyday, he will eventually decide it is good.

When I first brought Zeke home I tried a couple different things. What he finally liked was a dinner plate with water. I put it on the table and splashed my fingers in it. After that he was hooked! He would splash around and have a great time. Now, since we got the cage with the gym on top he uses that water dish as his bath tub and doesn't care about the dish any more. I like it, this way he can choose when he wants to take his bath instead of waiting for me to get the dish out. He takes a bath almost every day and some days more than one! And I swear he's aiming for me when he splashes! rolleyes.gif

I would also suggest trying different dishes. For Kermit, he only bathes by me spraying him. Once, the water bottle I was using broke, so I had to buy a new one. It took him forever to get used to the new water bottle. Birds are quirky. As a prey species, they are ingrained to be afraid of new things because for them, it could mean becoming dinner for something. You have to introduce things slowly and calmly and sometimes often for them to get use to it.

Good luck.

Well now I got him to accept one of my dishes but he's still wary. Some days he'll jump around in the water and some days he'll go flying away from it. Ah well it'll probably get better. smile.gif
