Hey guys. I'm looking into new foods, and I'd like to switch my guys to a better food. I'm looking at Diamond foods, and am wondering if any of you use it, and how you guys like it. I looked at Canidae, and to be perfectly honest, there's no way I can even come close to affording $40 for a 40 lb lb right now. My friend has 4 danes and feeds canidae, and 1 40 lb lg lasts her a week and a half. Now, I have 2 danes and 4 other large breed dogs I'm feeding...so I need something that's decent quality and affordable. Diamond looks decent, and is only a little more expensive than the Purina Dog Chow, so what are your opinions on it?

Wasn't it Diamond foods that just issued a recall because of tainted rice protein?

Diamond manufatures Natural Balance, and a couple of varieties of Natural Balance have been recalled. It's due to tainted rice protein concentrate. Diamond doesn't use any rice protein concentrate or wheat gluten in their foods.

Diamond was a source of a recall last yr due to aflatoxins. The fungus had grown on the corn crops and got into the foods.

I feed Diamond and my two muttleys seem to be doing well on it. Coats are slick and shiney. Not a lot of "filler" in it so stools are still small like when using "premium" dog foods.

The boxer has actually gained a pound or two on it and is looking pretty darn good.

Thanks Connie.

Man...I posted this same exact question on a dane forum I am on, and it has started what is now on the verge of being a flame war between members. Apparently, if you don't feed the best of the best of the best (and what that is depends totally on what each individual is using), you are on the verge of being an irresponsible owner. A well known and respected dane breeder recommends a certain food, and it looks like great food...but the problem is it runs about $5o for a 40 lb bag. My friend uses Canidae for her 4 danes, and goes through 40 lbs every week and a half. We figure a bag might last me a week. Figure about $35 a week, and I'd be spending $140 a week in dog food alone. I go through a 55 lb bag of Purina a week, and spend about $70 a month in dog food. That's a HUGE difference. The Diamond will only cost me about 2 or 3 dollars more a bag, so I can live with that.

Hey Stacy,
My groomer recommends Diamond foods, and my mom feeds them to her two dogs and has been quite satisfied with it.
IMO it is a fine food.
Good luck in making your decision!

No, you can't get it at a regular grocery store. You can get it at pet stores and feed stores though, or online.

I have been feeding Diamond lamb & rice for the past few years. One of our dogs was having allergy issues with every dog food we tried until we tried the Diamond L&R. All 5 of our dogs eat it and I have found they produce less waste than on any of the other easily obtained brands we had tried. A 40 pound bag lasts us 2 weeks...that is with 3 big dogs and 2 little ones. They are all shiny, but a bit on the plump side! We rescued a Yorkie mid december and he LOVES the Diamond food, will eat it instead of canned alot of times. I recommend it, my dogs are doing great on it!

Hey,
Don't know much about Diamond, except that it was recalled last year. Had alot of people tell me to stay away from it.
Have you looked into getting breeder bags? When I had fosters, I used to pick up the breeder bags of Evolve, which is a good food, for $45 Canadian. I imagine you can get them for other foods too. Sometimes the food and pet stores carry a limited supply, or you can order them in.
Just a thought, good luck with your choice.
Lena.
