Does anybody here use Aloe in their birds' drinking water?

Besides putting aloe vera in a spray bottle to spray your bird, how much of it and what type of aloe vera liquid should I put in the drinking water?

I also heard of Aloe Detox. Is that something that should only be given whent he bird is sick or can it be given as a daily additive to the drinking water?

Hi Seasa,
I don't know much at all about aloe and aloe detox for birds which is why I avoided posting in reply. My husband takes aloe detox every day and has been for months. It's suppose to be great for the liver and heck he just got his liver checked during his physical and it's great!
Anyway, I have read some interesting reading about the wonders it does for a gravely ill bird and it's brought them back from the brink of death.
When I was talking to my vet before I had my greys blood panel done, we were discussing what can be done for liver problems, should Tobias have one. She was all for holistic and mentioned milk thistle which aloe detox contains along with many other beneficial ingredients which are safe for birds. I didn't talk to her about aloe detox though. Anyway, she said I shouldn't start Tobias on anything like that unless it was determined he had a liver issue.
with that said it's probably best not to add it to your birds water unless the vet determines a reason for it.
I wouldn't even know how much to add anyway as the sites with the stories about the ill birds never said how much. You could however call your avian vet, tell them what you would like to do and ask if they think it would hurt to give it to your bird and they could give a recommended dose. If you do find anything about it please let us know as I have read it's something that should be kept in a birds emergency kit.
Hope you find some answers

Thanks. You know, I think we've been reading the same site about the sick bird (Eclectus?) biggrin.gif

I've asked my avian vet and he didn't really have a definite answer for me (not a holistic one) However he suggested I look on the Avian Medicine Chest website, but I didn't find any info on it. I have a book by Gudrun Maybaum, and in it she lists the great things Aloe is known for and can do. I think I'm going to give her a call and ask her about it. Yes, Milk Thistle is great for the liver. Gudrun mentions it in her book. I think one week every 2 months or so would be good for the aloe detox in birds. Makes sure that the system is nice and cleaned out..... I bought both, the aloe detox and the juice itself. Not just for Louie, but for me and hubby as well. rolleyes.gif

I was thinking of looking up a local holistic vet so this is a good motivation for that. I have read of people giving it to their birds in a similar fashion you're planning to, but can't remember where I read that. Don't think it was mentioned how much either, but yes, the eclectus story, I think said they gave as much to the bird as they could get in him. hmm

I found this site that talks about the aloe detox for birds, although it doesn't state the amount.
