Full Version: I Think I Fell For A Gcc

I went to a local petstore for dog food. Sometimes they do have a couple of birds for sale, mostly from people who don't want them anymore. They did have a Quaker and a GCC, however, not for sale. They were the "petstore birds" I totally fell for the little GCC. What a sweetheart!! He climbed down and layed on his back like a little puppy and I tickled his belly and he just layed there and played with my finger. Didn't try to bite me once and wasn't afraid of me at all. wub.gif

Good thing he wasn't for sale, cuz I would have gotten in big trouble. blush.gif

The QP was a little meany. They even had a sign on the cage warning about sticking your fingers in it, LOL. Owner said, he was definitely a one person bird "her bird" LOL Yep, sounds like a QP.

So, does anyone have a Green Cheek Conure and how do they get along with QP in general? I noticed he was a bit smaller than the QP, but such a sweetheart and so pretty.

I have a gcc but not a qp so dont know about them getting along. Love the gcc though.

I luv my gcc, by far my fav bird i own....they have huge attitudes though. If you check out some gcc conure message boards you will see the majority seem to have biting issues. mine is easily overstimulated. when i take too long to let him out of his cage, he will bite and does draw blood. he is very cockatoo like with his extreme need to be with a human being. I call "pablo" my "little stalker" My guy is fearless and agressive with anybody he can boss around. probably because of their propensity towards biting I see them offered very cheaply as a rehomed bird on craigslist. my bird luvs laying on his side up against my neck. he requires tons of toys to burn off his high energy level. I also highly reccommend getting the largest cage u can, mine climbs all over his cage and swings endlessly from multiple swinging toys.my bird also has to have padlocks on his cage doors as he escapes, did i mention their smart little buggers? mine does talk as well. pretty low volume call, but can hit some high notes too.

I have a GCC and a Qp, do they get along??? NO they don't get along but this is OK. They both have their own separate cages about 5 ft apart. I think if they didn't have each to occupy their time they would be bored.

My sister in law has a green cheek conure and a qp. They cage together too. They are best buds!!! I love her litte Gcc. Too bad I didn't know earlier as we have a local breeder that was willing to sell me one at a very good price. I instead decided to get another plumhead. My friends just went to Colorado today. It would have been perfect@!!!
Good luck finding one out there. They really are cute little clowns aren't they?

I saw a gcc at the petstore the last time I went. Funny little thing and was right at two months old. I told him if I knew my hubby wouldn't kill me, I'd take him home.

I've always wondered if they could get along but I know my Georgie...she has this "this house isn't big enough for the both of us" attitude.

I bet if you were to get babies together right at the same age, they'd get along.

I've met a couple- they seem to be pretty funny little guys. Back when I was researching what bird I wanted, I was looking into them, as they are supposed to have full conure personalilties, but are from the quieter genus (Arantingua versus Pyrah-something... too lazy to look that up).

Anyway... they also come in color mutations. I almost died either laughing or in shock today going into Petco and they had a cinnamon GCC called 'fancy' for the same price as the regular one. I felt I probably looked like those old cartoons- you know, with the $$ in the eyes, except 'MBS' instead laugh.gif

Thanks for the info everybody.

LOL, Alusdra, yep, I know that look. Like I said, I was lucky that one I saw was not for sale.

Gosh, I would like to live in those areas where birds are cheap. Here it seems that you can't even get a Cockatiel for under $80. GCC run around $250+ up depending on the color mutation and that is from a breeder, the pet stores usually start around $300 for the regular green ones!

GCC are so cute...my 4 year old was begging me for a sun conure...I had to say no but if I would've had the money with me I think I would;ve caved in LOL

You'll probably say "DUH!" but what's MBS? Someone else posted something about that and I don't know what it stands for...

MBS = multiple bird syndrome .. tongue.gif

Yep I am in a cheap GCC area. Mine was $50 with his cage from ... Craigs List. He was a sweetie with his previous owner, I was giddy thinking about what a sweet bird I would have.

The first night was fine. Then he started trying to bite my fingers off. I read forums and learned that no matter how bad I wanted to jump and yelp I had to pretend like it didnt hurt. That was the key. No reaction, why bite. So he is now being a nice bird.

Nacho (my QP) is curious about him, but they are across the room from each other.

The GCC is fearless! He will run down his cage to dog level and try to get them. The dogs are not real interested in testing his beak. Today when I was on my way back from the kitchen I found him in the living room walking to me. Apparently he thought he should be able to come! The dogs stayed out of his way.

I have to agree that they have very BIG attitudes. He must think he is a macaw.
