I to all the guys I know from An African Grey!!! My name is Dawn, and I am the proud owner of a 4 month old (Coco) and two 10 year olds, Charlie & George (re-homed) African Greys! However, all the people I know at AnAG have Quaker's and have so convinced me that Quakers are too adorable not to have!!! wub.gif

So I am already on the search for one!!! I have had no luck yet, but I am not in too much of a rush, so that I can learn more while I am looking!!!

I have almost read ALL (lol) the posts here... I am still reading... And have learned a lot!!!

I have a question thought - although I am sure I will find the answer in some of the posts - do they all SCREAM? I suppose that if I get a yound quaker, I can stop this - but I had a sun conure once, and they can be pretty noisey too! biggrin.gif I just need to keep on top of this issue! HEE HEE...

I am looking forward to learning more and asking LOTS of questions!!! rolleyes.gif

I am also looking forward to owning one! Noise or no noise!!! I look forward to the cuddling and kisses - that I know Quaker parrots love to give... Coco is not the cuddly type, even though she is extremely tame - the other two... well, they just the "not so friendly" type... - OH BOY!!!

Hopefully soon I will be the proud owner of a Quaker!!! wink.gif

Welcome to the flock!
Yes they can be noisy so expect it if you are getting one and if you get a quiet one then you can consider yourself lucky.
I have a sun conure who I would say is much louder than my quaker. I did a decible reading on him and the quaker once and the sun's readiing was way up there. I think the quakers was in the 80 range and the sun conure was about 115.
Given both do not scream all the time but they do have their moments smile.gif
I am sure you will get tons of information from everyone here and soon you will be on your way to quaker ownership well to be honest quakers own us.

Hey, Welcome to the Zoo...You're going to love living here!!

As far as do they all scream....depends on what you call screaming...Just like any other kind of bird they have their moments...some worse than others. I'm fortunate in that I've not had what I would call a Screamer Quaker The one I have now has her moments but its usually when the other birds get going and its more like a flock call than a true scream. Though I have known of a few that were Screamers. But like Imp said...they aren't as loud or as piercing as a Sun conure.

Hope you're able to find a quaker soon.

Welcome to the forum:

My avian vet tells me that conures are much louder than quakers, as the prior posts mention.

My Chica is quite a quiet QP -- now. When she first came to live with me after an abusive home, she screamed constantly. She had been living with crack cocaine addicts and I am pretty sure she could have been addicted from living in the fumes. She was also plucking. Since then, she has calmed down considerably although she does a bit of flock calling in the mornings and evenings which is not as loud as her prior screaming. She will scream for attention if there are people around she doesn't know but only briefly. She has also stopped plucking -- in fact she quit that as soon as she arrived in my home and got some TLC. Now she is the most loving, cuddly pet you could imagine. wub.gif

That's all the experience I have but I hope it will be helpful to you.

Best of luck in finding your new fid.

Hi Dawn,
I am new to this site also however i have already began to like it. I am a proud owner of a Quaker name Wesser, because when I brought him home he made a little noise to let me know that it was time to feed him. I bought him from a lady that handfed him as a baby. i would highly recommend that if you can find one that has been hand raised it would be easier on you because when you get one that is hand raised it will be used to being handled alot. as far as a screamer, Wesser is not loud at all, however he will let you know when a stranger walks in the house. Quakers are real smart birds and notice everything around them. When you find one and bring it home start talking to it right away. I started spending alot of time talking to Wesser and when he was about 12 weeks old he started talking and now he is 4 yeaars old and has about a 70 word vocabulary. He can make sentences and ask questions. his 2 favorite 2 questions are, 1. where are you going? and 2. what is your problem?. Good luck. these are just some personal experiences that I have been through. I placed an ad on a website called upatsix.com. once you register you can place an ad and try to find one there. I placed an ad on there last week looking for a handfed baby cockatiel for my niece and today her mother and I went to meet a lady just 30 miles for my house and bought her a baby. she spent her money that she was saving for a handfed baby and now she has a well cared for little fid. again good luck
