Full Version: My 10 Year Old, Kahala

Last summer I was given a Quaker. Her (not actually sexed) name is Kahala. Thy said she was 8, but her band has a 97 on it, which I am assuming is her hatch year. That puts her at 10 years this year. They just gave me her and the cage, they just wanted a good home for her. Her cage was pretty small (18"x18"x~20"), so I got a deal through the manager at my work (a pet shop) who had a big cage she no longer needed. It is 22" wide, 32" long, and about as tall as me when on its cage. She had only ever had seed, but after two months I got her on Zupreem Natural Cockatiel, which I recently switched to the parakeet because the only difference is the pellet size (she dropped half of the larger cockatiel pellets). She has a fluorescent light on her cage with am aquarium bulb that has UVB in it.

I have that exact cage for my finches flight cage...You Quaker should be very happy in it with all that room. Make sure she has lots of different sized perches and textures. which it appears you do.

If it were me, I'd have the food and water dishes at different levels so she has to use more than just the top part of her cage, thus getting more exercise.

She's really cute! Welcome!

I like your cage. And the set-up with the light is pretty cool. I would suggest, though- putting some of the bowls lower so that she has to go around the cage more (ie- 'forage').

Wow, that's a nice cage Kahala has there! I agree with Andie's Mom though about moving the food/water, I took her advice back when we got Casey in January and it helped a lot and it made her move around the cage and get more exercise. wink.gif

Welcome, you definitely found the most addicting place on the net! laugh.gif
