Hi all,

I recently came across infused anodized cookware by Calphalon. It is stick resistant, but doesn't seem to possess the same properties as their nonstick line. Check it out: Calphalon One Infused Anodized

The anodized cookware is broiler safe and oven safe, whereas the nonstick line is only oven safe up to 500 degrees F and isn't broiler safe at all. This leads me to believe whatever is in the anodized cookware is quite different than the nonstick cookware we are all so leery of.

I'm not going to run out and buy this stuff, so please don't give me the "better safe than sorry" speech... I've heard it. I'm wondering if anyone has any more information on this product than I've come up with so far.

Thanks!

Sarah what I would suggest you do is contact the manufacturer and ask them specifically if it contains teflon of any type...and explain your concerns...

I am pretty sure that stuff is safe, I believe the people at my sanctuary use it, but I'm not completely positive that is the same thing, pretty sure though. And they wouldnt fool around with not having it be safe, many birds lives are at stake for them..BUt check it out and let us konw!

I found some additional information on the Calphalon web site:

What is "hard-anodizing" and what does it do?
How does Infused Anodized technology work?
What is nonstick material made of?

These FAQs help, but they still don't completly answer my question (is that polymer "infused" in the aluminum safe at high temps?), so I've emailed Calphalon, and I'll let you all know how they respond.

I have a feeling it is Hard anodizign that they used, not the infused, that sounds dangerous...

I received a timely reply from Calphalon, but they weren't all that helpful. This is what they wrote:

QUOTE
The Association of Avian Veterinarians has advised that any cooking fumes, smoke and odors that have little or no effect on people can seriously sicken and even kill birds, often quite quickly. Cooking fumes from any type of unattended or overheated cookware or even certain overheated food ingredients can damage a bird's lungs with alarming speed. This is why bird owners should take steps to protect their pets, such as keeping their birds out of the kitchen, never leaving cookware unattended, never allowing pots and pans to overheat, and making sure that their kitchen is properly ventilated at all times. While our Infused Anodized cookware will not become damaged with higher temperatures- certainly higher temperatures puts your pet birds at a greater risk. Unfortunately we cannot provide you with information on what our Infused Anodized surface is sealed with due to its proprietary nature.

I guess hubby and I will just have to learn to cook with stainless steel after all.

Got the email back. they use the hard anodized aluminum (NOT THE INFUSED) they bought their set at Macy's. I'm sure you can find a brand that isn't infused, and has the hard anodized finish. I know that is safe, since it doesn't have any chemicals, its just a heating process to change the finish of the aluminum.

Thanks Karen!

So I guess we can add (plain) hard anodized aluminum to our list of "safe" cookware! Just to reiterate, this already includes stainless steel, cast iron, and glass cook/bake ware. I think ceramic bake ware is on this list as well as long as it isn't coated with something funky, correct?
Cosmo & Marti's Mom
you got it!
Although I've seen instances where cast iron has coatings on it so just be aware!

we use glass over here, it may be a little different to cook with but it works for us and is fid safe biggrin.gif

What about Greenpan Non-Stick cookware. "The ceramic-based, nano nonstick coating in these amazing pans doesn't contain any PTFE, and isn't manufactured with PFOA."

I just read an article that says that Greenpans are safe. Here is is: About Greenpans

I've found them on Ebay, Macys.com, Hsn.com.

Martha Stewart GreenPan

Todd English GreenPan

Everything that I've ever read is that cookware is only a problem if it gets over 500 degrees, which shouldn't happen if you are at your stove. Is this not right?
Andrea5699
very true.... BUT the risk for me is simply not worth it.. what if i forget it? what if, what if.. for me the risk is too much. what if i have a flukey pan that happens to overheat at a lower temperature?

I love my stainless steel set.. lasts longer then teflon and is better for you! Plus, teflon over time can have coating come off in the foot which the idea to me is just gross..

Birdies safety if just too important to risk it..
