Does anybody feed these as a main diet or a treat? I have been trying to get Punky on pellets but she is less than enthusiastic. She will eat a few of them, but SO prefers fresh and seeds. She has been plucking lately so I have been trying to vary her environment and find stuff to keep her busy. I got a trial of nutirberries thinking to use them as forage food (they were free)if she would eat them and she TORE THE FIRST ONE UP! She ate nearly every little bit. They advertise that they are a total food product. Heck if they make her happy and healthy.......anyway, anybody feed this as main food? How much so you feed? How much do you supplement? Do you still need pellets?
Thanks
Doreen and Punky (I think I should eat them all the time Mama...)

You want to definitely get your bird on pellets. Seed should only be fed as a freat once in a while. There is a conversion method on here from Andie. Just my opinion

I feed them as a treat about 1/day. I think UZ was saying he used it to transition a bird to pellets? They were the only think I could use to get Sylvia to do anything peaceably when I first got her. I don't know about feeding them as the main food- the cost alone ohmy.gif I mean, for the same price of (assuming 1/day) maybe 2 weeks of the nutriberries you get 2 1/2 lb of food (approximately). I go through like 1lb a month so... Of course, this may be because Sylvia eats so many nutriberries... I think I have confused myself. If I ever finish waffling on the scale I'll let you know more exact figures. laugh.gif Also- I don't think they are as complete as the pellets, and certainly contain more peanuts (whole and butter) which isn't good for fatty liver concerns. As a treat and a transition food, they're priceless, though.

It wasn't me that used them to help convert, but it couldn't hurt. wink.gif Nutriberries are meant to be a treat only. Certainly the manufacturer would like us to use more, but they should be limited to one maybe 2 per day.

If Punky will eat a few pellets, then you are being hoodwinked. These guys are so smart. They know we'll eventually cave in and give them the seed they crave. They'll put on displays telling you they're starving, dying from lack of seeds. It's a load of poop.

Stick with the conversion method posted at the top of this page and don't quit or give in. Seeds are only a treat. Pellets should be offered 24/7. A bird won't starve itself if there is a food supply handy. Punky knows the pellets are food, it's up to you not to give in to her.

Believe me. I've been through 2 really difficult conversions with Tiko, our Grey, and Tinker my bullheaded parrotlet. Both are now happier and healthier after conversion.

My vet told me the same thing the others who've already posted have written. Nutriberries are not a good food replacement...just an occassional supplement. biggrin.gif I'll give Buttons one if we're going somewhere and she needs to have something to keep her beak busy while in the travel cage. But the pellet conversion is the best way to go. I also give seeds as a treat and spread a few around in the pellets (even though it's frowned upon by most). But my QP's main staple is the pellet.

Yep, I have also encountered an avian vet who said that Nutriberries weren't that great. This was when this vet said I should get my fids onto pellets. I didn't know what Nutriberries were but the name sounds so healthy biggrin.gif and that is why I asked her about them.

Hope Punky will necome more and more enthusiastic. You may want to try various kinds of pellets. The first time I tried Harrison's I had been given the wrong kind (course) and my birds were totally not interested. Then I got the right kind (fine) and they started eating them right away. The same probably goes for the various brands.

If you're looking for a distraction/treat for Punky, nutriberries are great. I've found that with Larry, they don't last long, but they keep him busy while he's tearing into them. I noticed he doesn't even eat the seeds at first - he just discards them to get to the peanut butter center. So I tried giving him straight peaunt butter on a spoon, and discovered it works almost as well, and it keeps him quiet longer because then he has the spoon to play with wink.gif.

I give them as a treat only. Now that I have done some heavy research into the foods, I use it very sparingly. The main problem I have with Nutriberries is Propylene Glycol. (is a derivative of natural gas and commonly used in a variety of consumer products and food products, including deodorants, pharmaceuticals, moisturizing lotions, and fat-free ice cream and sour cream products) NOT something I really am too eager for my bird to eat daily.

I don't know why but For some reason my fids don't like them...both Milo and Mickey throw them on the floor, into the grate, off the table etc...Don't matter where they are if I put a nutriberry in front of them it gets tossed... laugh.gif I even tried eating one in front of them to see if they would eat it then but NO lol

Willie loves them but they give him the squirts.

Well, Poppy is primarily on nutriberries. He will not eat pellets, and it is all fresh food, nutriberries/ avicakes and beak appetit'. I try to give him a lot of fresh fruits and veggies, and I keep pellets available, but I dump them out.
I tried the several conversion methods, all I got was wieght loss and a grouchy bird. When I got him, he was on a seed mix from the pet store, so I guess it is an improvement.
The only thing I have not tried is soaking pellets in apple juice, which I keep meaning to do. However, I feel that nutriberries are better than the seed mix he was on. The foraging aspect of nutriberries also keeps him busy. There is a lot of waste, and it is rather expensive, but I only have on bird so it is not that big of a deal.
Lafeber certainly claims they can be used as a stand alone diet. My vet said pellets too, but he will not eat them.
Good luck, let me know if you find anything that works. I have tried every brand (except roudybush, don't know where to get them).
